Acting Technical Director, Consumer ReportsMark Connelly is Acting Technical Director of Consumers Union (CU), an expert, independent, nonprofit organization whose mission
is to work for a fair, just, and safe marketplace for all consumers. CU publishes
Consumer Reports and ConsumerReports.org.
As Acting Technical Director, Mr. Connelly is responsible for all consumer-product testing at CU, overseeing the staff and
operations in more than 50 specialized labs at
Consumer Reports’ National Testing and Research Center in Yonkers, NY. He also oversees operations at CR’s 327-acre Auto Test Center in East
Haddam, CT, the largest independent consumer automobile testing center in the world.
Mr. Connelly was appointed to his current post in June 2008. He has been at CU for nearly 20 years, beginning his career as
a Project Leader testing appliances and working his way up to Senior Director of Appliances and Home Improvement. He’s overseen
testing that’s led to a significant impact on the consumer marketplace.
While he was Senior Director of Appliances and Home Improvement, Mr. Connelly oversaw testing of major appliances including
dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines and dryers, as well as home improvement products such as decking materials, paints,
stains, faucets, countertops, and many more. He also oversaw the testing of automotive aftermarket equipment, textiles, power
equipment, building products and home environment products. In addition to holding the title of senior director, Mr. Connelly
also served as Acting Associate Technical Director.
Before joining Consumers Union, Mr. Connelly worked at Mechanical Technology Inc. in Latham, N.Y. as a field test engineer
in its Automotive Stirling Engine program. Prior to that, he worked at the Texaco Inc. research labs in its industrial lubrication
and combustion research groups.
Mr. Connelly graduated summa cum laude from Manhattan College with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and received an M.S. in
Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, he holds a Masters in Business Administration
from Fordham University and a professional engineering license from the State of New York.
