Basic steps can be more effective than air purifiers, according to experts, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association. Less expensive options include:

  • Banning indoor smoking

  • Keeping pets out of bedrooms

  • Removing carpeting and other dust-mite harbors

  • Opening windows whenever possible

  • Using outdoor-venting fans in the bathroom and kitchen

  • Maintaining heating equipment

Avoid ozone generators, which emit hazardous levels of ozone. They should be used only by professionals after serious contamination from a fire or flood, not for routine air cleaning.
