Comment:
I have owned Kenmore 5000-6000 BTU window airconditioners and have found them to be extremely reliable and good value. This new model replaces an older Kenmore unit and is better in every way. I particularly like the auto fan speed mode. For a window air conditioner it is quiet enough that I sleep through it's cooling cycles at night. Really works well cooling down our master bedroom, while keeping the rest of our house at a higher temperature. For $100 less than the CU top rated model, this is a no-brainer, definitely best buy, purchase.

We use it to cool the bedroom so the central air-conditioner does not have to run at night.

The remote control does not light up and the buttons have insufficient elevation to feel at night. You will need to turn the lights on to make an adjustment. Yes, the beeper is very loud so most people won't miss the sound.

The auto fan control does not respond quickly or does not work at all. If you are on high speed and switch to automatic, it stays on high. The same for low speed. I'm not sure if it ever changes speed.

The sleep mode raises the temperature 2 times in 2 degree increments at 15 minute intervals. Then after 6 or 7 hours it goes back to the lower temperature and you wake up cold. This is very poor programming.

External light shines through the air conditioner and appears as poor insulation. Maybe not.

It has been given a good noise rating but I disagree. I have 2 other Kenmore window air conditioners and this one is the loudest. They use a smaller fan to produce the same amount of air flow and it creates a lot of white noise. The compressor is quiet but not the fan blower.

For the price it is a good air conditioner but it is cheap in many respects. I get the impression CR has adjusted their rating chart to squeeze this air conditioner into a rating higher than it deserves.

Yes, I would recoment this air-conditioner but I would prefer better choices. For another $25 it could have been a more practical air-conditioner.

Comment:
Just picked one of these up at Sears to replace an 8 year old 5400 BTU Kenmore unit. This one is about as quiet, maybe a trifle louder on high fan. Looks good, but feels just a little bit... cheaper in terms of construction. Then again it is $100 less than the previous one.The EER is nice (11 is excellent) and it cooled down the room with no problem at all. It's pretty light, easy to install, and the remote is nice.Overall I'd say it's a fine little AC unit for [$].
