Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's
our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on air conditioner
models like the LW8011ER.
Btu/hr.:
The unit's cooling capacity, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). Capacities range from 5,000 British thermal units per hour (enough for a modest-sized bedroom) up to 12,500 Btu/hr. (adequate for a large, sun-drenched room or even two interconnected rooms).
EER:
The energy-efficiency rating, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). The higher a unit's EER, the lower its operating cost compared with other models of its size.
Min window width (in.):
The minimum and maximum window-widths into which the air conditioner will fit. If your window opening is narrower than the minimum width, the air conditioner will not fit. If your window opening is wider than the maximum width, the side panels will not cover the entire opening.
Tested Model
The Ratings of LG LW8010ER were applied to untested model LG LW8011ER, which in our judgment is enough alike in its performance, features, and specs that our test results apply to both.
LG is a national brand available in a wide variety of independent and regional appliance retailers, as well as Home Depot and PC Richards. LG also markets lower-priced window air conditioners under the Goldstar name. Window air units range in price from $150 to $500, and in Btu from 5,000 to 25,000. The brand has units that are Energy Star certified.

Remote control Much like the remotes for home-entertainment devices, these wireless devices control almost any function on the unit. They're especially useful if access to the air conditioner is limited, as when the unit is mounted through the wall at ceiling level. The remote generally works well anywhere in a room, although some may not work as well when they're used far to one side of the air conditioner.
We bought two just before the weather turned, so haven't given them a lot of use. But the are the loudest air conditioners I've ever seen. In certain modes, they sound like a freight train in the house. Also, I am supremely disappointed in the cooling power. We got a call from [@] asking if we wanted the 5-year repair plan. I told them that we will probably discard them next year. BTW [@] installation was a nightmare. They no-showed several times, when they finally showed up, they didn't even clean up after themselves. No time to go into other problems.

Comment:
I have never bought any products from LG because ?I have worried about the quality but in desperation after moving to NYC and experiencing the fury of a July in the city, I flocked to [...] to find very few choices. Telling myself LG has gotten better over the years, this isn't 1987, I was able to talk myself into buying this unit. It worked fine until two days ago, 61 days after purchase, it broke. It simply would not turn on. I reset the plug, the green light was on indicating that power was active and flowing and the unit would not turn on with either the remote or the touch panel. I called LG and they wanted to send someone to repair it, but there is no way I want to hold onto a unit that can't make it through even one summer. Luckily [...] receipts are valid for 90 days and they don't require the original packaging to make a return, so back to [...]t I go this weekend. I've ordered a Frigidaire FRA106BU1 as my replacement. (I was on the fence about 8000 v 10,000 BTU so I decided to go bigger for the replacement). In any case, stay away from this one and the Kenmore that's made by LG (see the reviews on [@]) since they won't last!

Comment:
I installed one of these in my upstairs office. It does a good job cooling the ~400sqft room that has a couple of computers and other warm electronics perpetually running. Even at full speed it's fairly quiet - obviously there is fan noise, but no rattles or vibrations either with the compressor on or off. The fan speed is more than sufficient.

Build quality is very good; I didn't have any issues installing it, and it isn't too heavy for one person to manage.
