What's behind our blender Ratings?

Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 52 models in blenders to see which ones perform best.

We look for:

Overall score
This is based mainly on how well each model pureed soup and blended yogurt and fruit as well as useful features.
Yogurt blend
How well the model blended frozen fruit and yogurt for smoothies,
Soup puree
How well the model pureed chicken bouillon and vegetables for soup.
Maximum RPM
Tests conducted under no-load conditions for consistency. Results have been rounded.

You needn't spend a bundle to get a decent blender. Many of the models we tested, even the less-expensive ones, were competent at various tasks. Many have specific strengths, so choose one that suits your needs. If you make mostly fruit smoothies or icy drinks such as piña coladas, look for a model that did well in those tests.

While all of the tested models have some shortcomings, most were judged good for convenience and were reasonably easy to use. Those judged fair have more serious shortcomings that made them inconvenient to use.

The type of container and controls, features, and styling vary, so factor those considerations into your choice as well.

The bottom line: Price, styling, or the word "professional" is no guarantee of excellent performance or durability.

Blenders are one appliance that consumers are more likely to leave on the countertop--so upscale looks, increased power, and sturdier construction are driving blender sales. Many colors and finishes, including stainless steel, are now available, but appearance isn't everything.
