read efore you make the same mistake we did: https://getsatisfaction.com/breville/topics/problems_with_bkc700xl_after_two_years 15 months and machine died. our ugly old keurig machine is 7+ years old now and going strong... we have gone back to using it in the kitchen (it was our upstairs bedroom unti until breville died). Read these reviews and complaints before you consider investing [$] in a machine that won't last, clearly has a history of issues and poor customer service from breville to boot. https://getsatisfaction.com/breville/topics/problems_with_bkc700xl_after_two_years

Review of the Breville BKC700XL coffee maker. This is one of the most frustrating appliances I have ever owned! Based on my experience with the appliance and Breville customer non-support, I would never buy another Breville product. This particular product should be recalled as it is the product's engineering, not a flaw in any particular unit they produce that is the basic problem. In the beginning it worked fine. I work variable hours in the middle of the night. My wife bought this for me for Christmas so that I could make a quick cup of coffee in minutes when I needed one in the middle of the night. We have only used filtered water in the machine. It worked fine for a few months. Then it started making extremely variable quantities of coffee. Instead of a cup, it would be ½ cup, ¾ cup, etc. Then nothing would happen. No coffee at all. Then the infamous descale message appeared. It has never worked right (for long) ever since. At this point, we couldn't even descale it since nothing would flow. To descale the machine you run vinegar through it instead of water. Our problem was that when we pressed the Brew button, nothing happened. We searched the internet and found many suggestions to handle this situation. We eventually got through descale and the machine could brew coffee again – for a very short time. We descaled more. Lots of vinegar. Then it would work again for a short time. And of course it would fail exactly at those times I wanted a quick cup of coffee.By August of 2011 we were fed up. This was not a cheap machine and the coffee itself is not cheap. The machine was [$]. The coffee is about $.75 per cup. My wife contacted Breville tech support to see if there were something we were missing. We were authorized to go through a vetting process to make sure we were eligible for warranty return. I didn't have a receipt as it was a gift. Instead of going through the vetting process, my wife did another descale. But the descale process didn't work directly as nothing would flow. We had to search the internet for solutions. It again started working after multiple descalings. This pattern continued until December. Then in December it really stopped working completely. We thought the warranty period had ended (the original receipt couldn't be found) so we were committed to getting the descale working. After gallons of vinegar and hours of working with it, it started working again -- for a very short while. In January 2012 it stopped working again. Again descaled with vinegar until it was flowing correctly using various techniques to get any flow going so it would descale. Then only using distilled water. It brewed exactly three cups of coffee before it STOPPED AGAIN!! Then I got interested and started researching the Breville Kurig coffee maker problems on the internet and found that our problem with the machine is by no means unique. Many others have complained of the same issue. The internet is full of complaints about this product. It does have a faulty design. It's ironic that our $30 Mr. Coffee has worked for years with no problems. We still have a working television purchased in 1986. We have a radio purchased over 20 years ago. We use it every day and it still works great. This is my typical experience with appliances. My conclusion is that the machine is a poorly designed, unreliable product with short longevity. Not worth [$]. Not worth $100. I think the ConsumerReports rating of 41 is too high as it doesn't cover this particular issue of product longevity. By the way, also check out Breville's warranty. They don't even warrant that it will make coffee even though it's a coffee maker!Buyer Beware! This is a bad product. So now you know why the one star rating. If you do buy it, I recommend using a credit card that doubles the warranty period. Our Discover Card does that. However, my Breville was purchased with cash.

I love Breville products. So I was willing to pay more for this coffee maker. The first one lasted 13 months (3 cups/day), I figured it was just a bad one, so I purchased a second one. It is now just over 12 months old and is dying again. Same problems as before, cup size is all over the place, VERY slow to brew.... I will replace it, but not with another Breville. VERY dissapointed.
