About - Amana ADB1600AW[W]

Washing:
Washing performance is assessed by running the normal or equivalent cycle to clean a full load--10 place settings of very dirty dishes that were scraped but not rinsed. We examine the dishes and glassware after cleaning for residual food.

Energy use:
This is for a normal cycle. The largest portion is needed for heating water, both at the water heater and in the machine.

Noise:
This was judged during fill, wash, and drain, mainly by a listening panel.

Comment:
After consulting CR (big fan!) I bought an Amana ADB1500AWW (same model # is also Whirlpool/ Jenn-Air/ Maytag) in Dec. 2006. With a kitchen remodel, life has been a bit rough, so I can't criticize the dishwasher too heavily - it has lasted 5 years. But, let's be clear, it's never been able to handle really dirty dishes, not to mention pots and pans - no way. It's kind of incredibly loud and has developed a high-pitch whine that lasts the first five minutes it's on. And a couple of months ago, my wife complained it wasn't working too well, she sometimes had to run it twice to get the dishes clean. I looked into it, and most of the indicators on the control panel don't light up. It looks like the logic board is still good, because if you push the cycle button a bunch of times, though the cycle indicators don't work, the other indicators go through a logical sequence. Now my main complaint: the control panel is glued into the top panel of the door, and that part costs about $150. The controller board (the brains) is easily replacable but also costs about $150. With no way to tell which of the two components is malfunctioning, it's not attractive to guess. For about $350, I can get a comparable cheap piece of dishwasher (pardon the circumlocution). I pine for the days when things were meant to be repaired and not just thrown out. Maybe I can replace the control panel with and Arduino :)

Comment:
Exactly like a few other reviews, we have owned this dishwasher for over 2 years. at 13 months the electronic panel went, luckily under waranty (although it took 2 weeks for them to fix it). 13 months later...Electric panel went again. part [$]; labor $129...Going to take [$] and apply to new dishwasher since it is pretty much guaranteed it will fail again.

Comment:
I have owned the Amana ADB1500AMM3 since July 6, 2009. It broke down in May 2010 when it was still under warranty. It broke down again in June 2011. The repair man said it was the computer board and would cost at least $200 to repair. It is less than 2 years old and I don't consider it worth spending the money to have it repaired again. I only used the dishwasher about twice a week. Don't buy an Amana dishwasher.
