About - GE JBP35SMSS

The GE JBP35SMSS is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric range models like the JBP35SMSS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful element could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3 quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the ability of the lowest power element to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful element to its lowest setting to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Cons
Burners Wobble

Comment:
I hold my breath when cooking lest something spill over. The elements don't rest correctly. Consequently the pots on the elements are wobbling when cooking. GE sent replacement burners, but they were so twisted out of shape that I couldn't install them. Home Depot says I could have returned them within two days of purchase, but that was two weeks too late.

Comment:
I just had this range installed in our summer home and baked cookies in it this morning. I tried both dark and shiny cookie sheets and they all turned out evenly browned with a little time adjustment which is normal. I always buy my appliances from the independent appliance dealer in my small hometown because he will come immediately if there is a problem and stands behind the appliances he sells. His pricing is also competitive with the big box stores because although they are 2 hours away, he has to compete with them. I expect no problems with this range as it is almost the same as my GE drop in coil range in our main home. I have experienced no exceptional heat on the stove top as others have reported. I will do most of my summer canning on this stove and from the experience of heating large kettles of water to cook summer corn, I expect the stove will work well for canning. One con I can think of is that I can't heat two tall kettles of water at the same time as the back large burner won't accommodate a tall kettle, but I couldn't do that on the stove this replaced either. I think the only other con is that the top (in both of my ranges) is noisy. That is partly because the whole top lifts up to clean under it - so it isn't solid. But that is a small thing. So far the performance of the range has been as good as its' ratings. I'm well pleased and would recommend it to someone who wants a basic range with no unnecessary frills to jack the price up.
