About - Whirlpool Gold GY399LXU[Q]

The Whirlpool Gold GY399LXU[Q] is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric range models like the Gold GY399LXU[Q] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful element could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3 quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the ability of the lowest power element to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful element to its lowest setting to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
Only 2 warning litghts for the 4 burners... Expect that from a cheap range, but not something in this price range?
Plastic (not SS) panel behind knobs ruined by plastic sponge and dish soap the first time we cleaned a spill. Suddenly, it was clear that this was a low quality item.

The we had a fire in the oven, and the oven no longer works. Touch the bake or broil button, and nothing happens. Flames in oven (plastic microwave dish left in broiler pan) caught fire) .

Since it's out of warranty, we plan to go to a store and check quality so our next range works for longer than 18 months.

Comment:
I didn't see this model at the appliance store, but selected it based on review & features. The bottom drawer handle is a cheap slice of metal with sharp edges. You have to be careful approaching this range, otherwise you can easily slice and cut your ankle. It is really flimsy & cheap. Their smoothtop is very difficult to keep clean appearance. It is very dark, and every drop of anything shows up on it. Definitely cannot saute with any depth pan or pot on this top. Overall, very disappointing. Also, only 2 flimsy oven racks!

Comment:
I have always purchased and recommended Whirlpool products. Every kitchen appliance I own is a top of the line Whirlpool Gold, after this no more.5 service calls have failed to resolve a serious design flaw. Whirlpools service techs say the touch pad will not work reliably with some people. When using this stove in convection mode the oven will not turn off without disconnecting the power and resetting. Filed a formal complaint with the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
