Anonymous from Aurora nailed it.
This mixer is a far cry from the fabled Kitchen Aid mixers of yore, which you might see in Julia Child's kitchen at the Smithsonian.
Ours faltererd and finally burned out when confronted with a batch of pizza dough.
We got the Magic Mill and have had no troubles.

Comment:
I bought this mixer based on the high review that CR gave it and my past experience with my Mom's KitchenAid mixer from 30 years ago. The KitchenAid of today is not the same as it was 30 years ago. It may look the same on the outside, but it's all a facade. The motor is inadequate and the driveline is marketed in a decieving way. They say it has all metal gears, which is true, but the transmission case is all plastic! All of the retaining rings and pins will work lose in short period of use. It's certainly nothing like the KitchenAid of the past.

When it is working, just be aware that this mixer can't knead 2 pounds of white bread dough on speed 2 for five minutes without overheating. When that happens, you have to let it cool down for 30 minutes before using it again. If you only make one hamburger bun at a time, this is your mixer. Everyone else will be frustrated.

Also note that the attachments that look like stainless steel are actually burnished steel and require hand washing and immediate drying. In other words, you have to take apart your mixer immediately after and start washing by hand or else it will tarnish.

Ultimately, this mixer had far too many flaws for me to keep it. When I heard that even the Pro 600 KitchenAid mixers have plastic transmissions and the same overheating problems, I jumped to a Cuisinart 7qt mixer and couldn't be happier. KitchenAid needs to step up their quality to restore their tarnished name.

I use my mixer very seldom, mostly around the holidays. It suddenly started leaking oil and after looking on internet blogs have found this is a common problem. I'm very disappointed in this product.

Nice but not mothers KitchenAid
06/18/2008
Strength
Strong and affordable
Weakness
Wisk must be hand washed & dried
My mom had a kitchenAid and it had a nice sturdy glass mixing bowl and it had a solid wisk that could be machine washed. I really miss being able to see the batter at the bottom of the bowl. I also miss the convenience of being able to throw the wisk into the dish washing machine. Still it mixes well. Hopefully it stands up to its reputation and lasts for decades like my moms has.

Excellent starter mixer

Strength
Heavy, sturdy metal construction. Easy to use
Weakness
Not powerful, 250W. 4.5quart bowl is too small
I'm overall very satisfied with this mixer so far. It includes a very useful instructions and recipes which you can find on the whirlpool website(parent company but slightly different than the actual booklet included in the machine) which ironically can not be found at kitchenaid. In fact, I can't find anything on kitchenaid site for manuals which is not very professional. The box states it can do 8 cups of all purpose flower (this number is too high). It also states a Durable All Metal Construction... I kinda believe that because once you set the mixer down you will find it very difficult to move by accident or effort. The first thing I did with the Kitchenaid classic was the pizza dough receipe in the instructions and recipes booklet. I was a little worried because it shooked a bit on only 3 1/2 cups of all purpose flower on speed 2 (This is the MAXIMUM recommended speed for doughs or heavy batters. Keep in mind the booklet does not recommend more than 6 cups of WHOLE WHEAT flour for those who are health conscious. I personally cannot recommend more than 4 cups of all-purpose flower because 4.5 quart bowl really isn't that big and I like having alot of room in the bowl after mixing; personal preference. I later did half the measurements for the basic white bread from 7 cups to 3 1/2 and it clinched my opinion because of the sound I heard mixing the ingredients. You do not have to follow my suggestions but do take it slow as this mixer really is not intended to make breads. The professional version is for that purpose.Other than that this is a very nice mixer. Cooking is much quicker and very essential for some recipes where mixing by hand is too much effort (for me anyway).
