I am very mechanically inclined. The fine tuning of the motor and gearing is terrible! This is my forth mixer over five years. (thank goodness for Costco's return policy)Mixer number four is sitting in my kitchen still in the box. I truly hope they have their manufacturing snafu's worked out. I use mine mostly for bread making; three to four loaves per week. All previous units have stalled due to overheating, very annoying! The motor and gearing continue to get noisier with each passing use. You'd think I'd move on to a different mixer but according to my research there doesn't appear to be one. Costco only sells Kitchenaid mixers so as long as they will honor their no questions asked return policy I will keep hoping Kitchenaid gets their act together.
Some may think my bread dough is too heavy and causes my problem, its not.My dough is always right at the edge of tacky gooey. I only use speed setting two with five and a half cups of flour.
My last mixer I knew as soon as I turned it on it was not going to last long. It didn't, eleven short months to stripped gears.
Other than the mechanical problems the unit looks great. Big but though, looks aren't everything, its whats under the hood that counts.
One more complaint. The adapter for grading cheese gets jammed in the unit. So jammed once it took a rubber mallet to remove the thing. You can not wedge match aluminum to aluminum. Dumb and dumber! Come on kitchenaid, just because your engineers have a diploma doesn't mean they have basic common sense or experience.

Comment:
The 5-quart mixer burned up making two loaves of bread. Ok fine. Buy the professional model KP26M1XER and that one only lasted me 1 yr and 8 months. Guess thess mixers are not made for weekly mixing of bread dough and muffins.

The first time I used my KitchenAid mixer, flour went all over the kitchen. I had a very hard time putting the flour in while the machine was mixing. I spent many months trying to find the extra plastic spill guard attachment that allows you to pour ingredients in. Many stores did not carry the proper size for my model. I ended up measuring my bowl and took a measuring tape to the stores in order to find one that would fit. I honestly feel that the mixer should be sold with a spill guard. The plastic guard is quite costly for a flimsy piece of plastic and the pour opening is still not large enough to comfortably add ingredients.
Recently I just went to use the mixer and I grabbed the metal batter mixing attachment. Shockingly my hands were all black from holding the beater attachment. I tried to wash it off to no avail. I then went on-line to find out what it was. It seems that you are not to put the attachments in the dishwasher. My attachments have only been hand-washed, yet they are still tarnished. The blackish grey powder is all over my cookie dough and dish cloths. I did not have any of the special cleaning products that others recommend on various on-line forums at home, so I ended up using my old faithful
hand mixer.
The KitcheAid mixer has been more trouble than it is worth. I am disappointed.
