I posted my comments and it was up for a while yesterday but it is not up this morning. I am going to try again. I purchased my kitchen aid 5 or 6 yrs ago and enjoyed using it. Although it was clear from the beginning that it did not handle bread dough with more than 8-9 cups of flour capacity. It did OK with cake batter. Lately, it was groaning and moaning a bit, making me wonder if the mixer was beginning to lose its power with even 7 cups of flour. One day last week, in the middle of me mixing pizza dough or light bread dough, it squeaked, and squalled loudly and the hook was stuck in the dough (like it would not be able to push even the small bunch of dough). When I removed the dough, it ran fine. When I replaced half the dough, it squeaked and did not turn. <br />When I looked closely, my dough had numerous particles of metal chips kneaded in all over ruining my entire dough. <br /><br />I called the 1800 number yesterday and the lady asked for model number etc... and without me asking for it, she quickly offered to send me another replacement (refurbished) and asked that I send bak my mixer to them. She said that this type of problem is extremely rare and in fact she has never heard of it. <br /><br />I am hoping that whatever went wrong would not happen in my new refurbished model. Otherwise, the mixer is stylish, love having it in my kitchen, always did well for pizza dough or cake batter.... . For tough bread dough, I always had to mix lightly, then divided that in half portion so that the mixer would not be so stressed. If I did not do that, it often overheated. IF you know how to use it for certain purposes. it is a wonderful machine.

I was not able to afford the regular price item and purchased refurbished model directly from the Kitchen Aid website 5 yrs ago (which comes with only 6 months warranty). Immediately, I did notice that it would not handle 14 cups but maybe 10 on thin cake batter and 6-8 if it is a bagel dough. I enjoyed using it but lately, it began to act somewhat sluggish. This past week, while making a dough, it got stuck (the motor is going but the gear is not turning) making this terrible squeaky noise that come from inside. Well, I was several feet away from it when it initially got stuck and squalled loudly. It still turned if the dough is out of the bowl. Just any weight that the dough hook encounters, it could not turn and it stopped and squealed. That is when I almost screamed. Metal chips had fallen out from the machine and kneaded silver metal chips into my dough ruining my whole 8 cups volume of pizza dough. The shock of wondering metal chips possibly been there before this apparent disfunction and potentially having ingested metal chips baked in other things I baked recently, (since the machine did act quite tired like it was groaning) made me worry. I called the 1800 number on my mixer and described the problem. They quickly offered me a replacement with another refurbished mixer of the same kind. They said that the metal chip falling out of the machine was something extremely rare and have never heard it before. I only pray that this has not caused us any health hazard! Today, during the call, the kind lady asked me to turn the mixer up side down to see the serial number, when I turned it back to the right side up, metal chips fell from the machine again. So, I jiggled the round thing that turns the shaft that the dough hook goes on,,, lord behold, enormous amount of metal chip is falling out! What has happened inside? I asked that they would give me a report of what they find inside when they investigate my mixer,,, mostly for our health reasons. Wondering if this has ever happened to anyone. I would recommend it if it works well like it did first few years so I would mark yes on the next item.

I do love my KitchenAid 600 Professional, but here's my story and if you unknowingly purchased a model with the dreaded plastic gear cover, you're going to want to read this. Purchased the 600, brought it home, started to whip about one cup of cream and GRINDING NOISE. Packed it up and returned to store and got another 600. Initially worked well. I usually bake bread during the winter months, but that year I had been ill and did not. The following winter, after the 1 year warrantly was up, I got my bread baking going. Now this machine is advertised as able to handle recipes with 14 cups of flour. I was using about 9 cups when I noticed the horrible burning plastic smell. Stopped the machine and my husband opened it up to see a plastic gear housing that was failing. I did an internet search only to find that KitchenAid had originally cheaped out and used the plastic gear housing (like that's going to work well) but had switched back to metal because of the obvious problems. Called KitchenAid, and so sorry, but it's out of warranty. I explained that I knew about their cheap out on the gear housing, but still absolutely nothing could be done that I wouldn't have to pay for. My motto is take it to the top, so I wrote a detailed letter to the president of Maytag(they now own KitchenAid, which could be the problem). I explained that while it was out of warrantly, that they knew very well that the gear housing was a disaster and that this is a [$] mixer, that advertised a 14 cup flour capacity...they need to stand behind their product and stop giving me the run around. About 3 months later I get a call from KitchenAid apologizing for my experience and they sent me a brand spanking new Professional 600 Mixer (with a metal gear housing). The moral of the story is, if the customer service department cannot help you, just say thanks, hand up and send a well written, letter to the person who hold the highest position you can find and address for. Don't be nasty, don't be profane, but make it clear that if they do not make it right, you will let everyone you come in contact with know what a poor product they now have. In my opinion, KitchenAid had become more concerned with offering every color under the rainbow than continuing their reputation as the best mixer for serious cooks.
