About - Amana AFD2535DE[W]

The Amana AFD2535DE[W] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the AFD2535DE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
This appliance was purchased as a family refrigerator. Unfortunately my complaints weren't readily discerned when I purchased it. Over the last three years we have replaced the center rail for the vegetable crispers on three occasions. It is a poorly engineered and cheaply manufactured part. I breaks at the point of insertion. The door of the meat drawer is flimsy and comes off the retainer ofter. I would not have purchased this unit nor would I recommend it to a friend (if I wanted to keep the friendship.)

Comment:
My Amana is 5 years old and just died. I had their recommended service people attempt to repair the [$] refrigerator and were unable due to a design problem. I called and wrote Maytag who apparently bought Amana (Whirpool is also in the mix) and was told they would do nothing. So be careful folks there are a lot of dishonest and dishonorable companies out there.

On March 24, 2006 we purchased an Amana French Door Bottom Freezer refrigerator (Model #: AFD2535DES.)

In less than 5 years we have already had to have two service calls for this appliance.
02/27/2008 Service call to replace failed evaporator fan motor
Cost: $178.00 (not covered by warranty)
11/09/2010 Service call to replace failed compressor and burned relay switch
Cost: $666.20 (covered by warranty)
We purchased this refrigerator based on the best buy review in Consumer Reports and the Amana reputation. Our expectation was that with normal use this refrigerator would run smoothly and without incident for many years – quality refrigerators often have more than a 20 year life cycle; often without repair.

On November 7 when our dinner was interrupted by a acrid burning odor accompanied by smoke emanating from the back of the refrigerator we were frightened and then disheartened that once again there was obviously a major problem with the unit. Fortunately, we were home at the time of the incident. Had we not been home this equipment failure could have possibly caused a fire with its attendant damage. The relay unit was hot to the point of melting. Had we not unplugged the refrigerator it would certainly have caught fire and potentially caused a great amount of damage.

Amana enjoys the reputation of building high quality, safe and dependable equipment but in this case the reputation was without foundation. As noted above, in a four year period there have been two major equipment faults one of which could have possibly caused much greater damage had we not been in our home at the time of the incident.
We have lost confidence in the reliability and safety of this refrigerator model.
