About - Haier PBFS21EDA[S]

The Haier PBFS21EDA[S] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the PBFS21EDA[S] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
We looked everywhere for a black French-door refrigerator that would fit our existing space, before finding this Haier. We have had it for just over two years and have had no problems. <br />Great adjustable shelves. They allowed me to put a turkey in there for the holidays. I love the large drawer at the bottom of the frig, which is big enough for a sheet cake or a pizza. The ice maker is in the top freezer drawer and is readily accessible. The door has filtered water, but doesn't dispense ice. The vegetable bins are adequate sized and temperature controlled. The freezer could be a bit bigger, but this is a counter-depth model and that obviously affects interior size. This model does hold more food than my old side-by-side. We have had many complements on this refrigerator. I don't know about the energy efficiency, but haven't noticed huge difference on the electric bill, which I would have expected on a new frig. That's the only reason I gave it four instead of five stars.

Comment:
I bought the model RBFS21SIA for around $1,500. It was the cheapest counter depth refrigerator I could find that was also attractive inside and out. Most of the other refrigerators of this type were almost $1,000 more. Energy wise, the US government report places it at $59 a year. So... this model must be a lot better than the Haier ranked by consumer report. So far, I am happy with it, but I have owned it for only 2 months.
