About - Maytag MBF2258XE[W]

The Maytag MBF2258XE[W] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the MBF2258XE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

About This Brand

One of the Whirlpool brands, Maytag is a major player in the bottom-freezer section of the market. The company was one of the first to introduce a French-door model with an external ice-and-water dispenser and a cabinet-depth model with an external dispenser.

Fix for Leaking Fridge

Comment:
There is a replacement part for this issue through Maytag customer service part # W106119951 called a p-trap drain tube kit. Maytag will supply the part, but installation must be performed by their certified technician, and the cost of service is the responsibility of the consumer. Nice. I'm expecting at least a couple hundred dollars since the entire freezer area has to be disassembled.

Comment:
We selected this model out of 2 options with the dimensions needed in our kitchen remodel. Consumer Reports had favorable rating but I've now learned to double check the Company Reliability rating to make my final selections. Even with good marks from CR - if the company doesn't stand behind their product a higher percentage of the time- you're in for trouble. Shortly after the 1 year warranty expired, our fridge began accumulating sheets of ice under the baskets in the bottom freezer. I called Home Depot where we bought it & was told, Dang, guess you should have paid for the extended warranty. It will cost between $100-$200 to pay a technician to come out & diagnose the problem. Fortunately, I've come across a very helpful site where many other consumers have had this same problem. We're going to try these suggestions: http://www.fixya.com/support/t14104592-water_in_bottom_freezer. Will report back once we check it out.

Comment:
It seemed to work fine, it's just a fridge which is what my wife and I wanted. We liked the idea of the freezer on the bottom, but the space is so weirdly laid out that it's hard to organize your food. Eight months after we bought it, the freezer floor filled with water and froze to a 1/2inch sheet of ice. I cleaned it out but 2 days later it happened again. Maytag service is closed on the weekend so I waited until monday and after more verbal work than normal, I got a service guy to come out and tell me the compressor was broken. ( he didn't have one) Two days later another service guy came out and confirmed the first diagnosis but he didn't have a compressor either. Finally I got Maytag to send one to me over night (4 days cause of weekend). I couldn't get a guy to install it until tuesday which he did, so I'm waiting tonight to judge the results. The repair guy told me the compressors go out often and were not made very well. He had installed 5 that same day. My opinion is to AVOID Maytag, Admiral, Magic Chef, Amana and Whirlpool because this seems to be a common problem and I think these brands are made by the same company.
