About - Samsung RF197AC[WP]

The Samsung RF197AC[WP] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the RF197AC[WP] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
We got a great deal on this fridge, but after just three years, we've got issues with water pooling on the bottom.

When I called Samsung about it, our choices were to pay hundreds of dollars for a repair or about $400 for a one-year warranty. It's also difficult to find repair people that work on this brand.

I'm going to try to fix the problem myself based on advice I've seen online, but this sure seems to be a design flaw. I would not buy this fridge again now that I know about it.

Water pooling under and in the crisper. Samsung has poor customer service, in spite of the fact that this is clearly a common problem.

Icing problem

Comment:
This fridge has a major icing problem. Every summer when the humidity rises, the drain ices up, causing water to collect in the crisper drawers and spill out onto the floor. The problem is fixable by removing the back panel and pouring boiling water over the fins and drain until the drain thaws and clears, but this is a major pain and shouldn't be necessary. It is very difficult to get the back panel off the inside of the fridge to access this drain. The drain hole is tiny; clearly a design flaw. This fridge is a lemon. Don't buy it, and don't let your friends buy it.
