About - Maytag MSD2559XE[W]

The Maytag MSD2559XE[W] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, side by side refrigerator models like the MSD2559XE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two refrigerators with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.
About This Brand

One of the Whirlpool brands, Maytag is a major player in the bottom-freezer section of the market. The company was one of the first to introduce a French-door model with an external ice-and-water dispenser and a cabinet-depth model with an external dispenser.

Comment:
I've had this refrigerator for a couple of months now and thought I would share some of my observations...

I love that there are seperate dispencers for the ice and water, this minimizes the need for my small children to push buttons to get their own cups of water. The way the freezer is designed, the second shelf does not go all the way to the back wall of the freezer. So if you have long things, like a long pack of chicken, to store in the freezer, it fits but only at an odd angle, taking up space. The icemaker is good, storage on the door and it makes ice pretty quickly. There are random ice cubes that end up at the bottom of the freezer, but not a big deal.

For the refrigerator, I think the top shelf feels a little weak. I usually store gallon containers of milk and juice on the top shelf. Now I'm not sure this new fridge can handle the weight and it makes me a bit nervous. I put a couple of gallons at the back of the shelf where it is the most sturdy and the remaining in the door or on it's side on another shelf.

This fridge does not have textured handles, which makes it easier to keep them clean.

Overall, I would absolutely recommend this refrigerator.

Comment:
Have had it serviced 3 times because of the ice maker. Approximately every three weeks the ice maker won't dispense ice and we have to take all the ice out and pour warm water thru it until the dispenser melts. This is messy and a pain-in-the-***. The technicians have told us this is a design flaw that is not fixable at this point. We have had the ice bucket replaced and still can't remove it from the door. It would be a fine refrigerator if the ice maker worked consistantly.

Comment:
The refrigerator looks great and works generally fine, except for:
1. Noise level - the water pump and ice maker are very loud. Not only was my 8 year old GE unit much quieter, dinner guests actually commented they 'had never heard such a loud fridge'..
2. Ice maker: the ice maker is at the top of the freezer side, but the ice bucket is in the left door. I didnt realize how much noisier this design would be. Remarkable: the ice container in the door is not quite covering the entire opening of the ise maker above it, seems to be a construction flaw. The result: some ice cubed 'miss' the ice container and fall 5 feet down hitting the floor of the freezer compartment, and accumulate there. This is VERY loud and you hear it everywhere in the house, even upstairs..
How long have you owned it:

Bottom Line
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
