About - Whirlpool Gold GSF26C4EX[W]

The Whirlpool Gold GSF26C4EX[W] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, side by side refrigerator models like the Gold GSF26C4EX[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two refrigerators with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
I have had this fridge for less than 6 months and it has been serviced 3 times already. I went into the kitchen one time to find water all over my floor. Ice maker didn't drop the ice causing it to back up and then shot water straight out and all over my floor.

Comment:
This refrigerator was just delivered yesterday, and its constant drone is driving me crazy. It is SO noisy. I am not a gourmet cook or picky appliance person. I just have to have good, old-fashioned utility...something that will serve us well, without issues, for years to come and withstand four children and heavy use. Imagine my disappointment when I had to turn the TV louder to drown out the annoying drone of the brand spanking new fridge! I am hoping the retailer will take it back, no questions asked, so I can be rid of this piece of noise someone called a fridge so I can get a real refrigerator that doesn't sound like it's been around since the '60s.

The positives of the fridge are it DOES have desirable space, a nice layout and more-than-ample features for the price. The noisy negative literally drowns out the positive for me, though! Pun intended.

Comment:
We thought it was a good design to have the icemaker in the freezer door. Wrong!!! It's VERY loud when the ice falls into the dispenser.

Also, we have to be very careful when closing the doors. You have to push the doors completely closed. With other refrigerators, you can give a quick push and they close on their own. This is very inconvenient when you are pulling things out of the fridge and don't have a free hand.

Ice Maker does not work half the time. Has had it serviced 3 times in less than 6 months.
One time in the middle of the night it decided to fill my floor with water instead of the ice maker because it backed up with ice that didnt dump. Which caused the water to shoot straight down the inside of my ice maker and out the door all over my floor.
