Careful with Low Overhangs

Really wanted to like this. Liked the fact that a cage closed down on thin bread slices to hold in place when toasting. However:
1. The toaster left a 1/2 wide non-toast (as in white) swath along the bottom of the slices. How hard would it be to put a heating element or 2 at the BOTTOM of the carriage's travel?

2. With the dial set at 5 out of a max of 6, it still took 1.5 cycles to get a nice shade of brown. 1 cycle gave an off-white shade to the slices (except for the bottom margin); had to start another round, then cancel after a minute or 2, to get a nice brown (except for the bottom 1/2 of white). I have doubts about the range of toasting available.

3. MOST worrisome was the heat it put out above the toaster. It's wide, which does accommodate bagels, but the slot widths allow a lot of heat to escape above. 6 above, it was 180F using an infrared thermometer. While I could place it at the edge of a counter, I was concerned that it might be inadvertently slid back under a kitchen cabinet and then started. Don't want that much heat generated under wood cabinets.

Comment:
After researching toasters we decided to get the Cuisinart toaster but were disappointed in it's performance. We then tried this B&D model and have been very happy with it. We've had it just under a month. The slots are big enough that toast can be put sideways for tall pieces. Since we keep our bread in the freezer, we use the frozen setting and it toasts great. The bagel feature works great also - toasts one side and warms the other (the Cuisinart just toasted bagels longer - on both sides).

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that once in awhile it toasts one side lighter than the other. Otherwise we hope this lasts as long as our last one - 15 years!
