About - Maytag 5000 Series Steam MEDE500V[W]

The Maytag 5000 Series Steam MEDE500V[W] is part of the clothes dryer test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric dryer models like the 5000 Series Steam MEDE500V[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Drying performance:
This score combines performance on three types of laundry loads of different sizes and fabric mixes: A 12-lb. load, predominantly cotton, representing a family's large weekly load; an 8-lb. load of cotton/polyester blend clothing; and a 3-lb. load of synthetic delicates, women's pajamas, nightgowns, bras and underwear.

Capacity:
Among the models we tested, drum volume varied from about 6 to 8.0 cu. ft.

Convenience:
For this measurement, we judged controls and ergonomics, such as ease of loading and unloading, servicing the lint filter, whether the door could clear a tall basket, and whether the machine has a raised edge to contain spills.

Comment:
This is the best dryer I've ever owned! Clothes dry quickly and the steam option is great for dress shirts and other clothing (wrinkles are gone). Bought pedistals with both washer and dryer and it makes it much easier to load and transfer the wash to the dryer. Got both the washer and dryer for [$] each and paid $199 each for the pedistals. Could not be happier with these units.

Comment:
I purchased this dryer (gas) along with the companion washer in October 2009. Overall I had been pleased with the unit. Never used the steam setting. There were problems with the lint trap (not effective) and the laundry being damp and requiring extra drying time. Labor Day weekend 2011 the dryer quit heating. Everything runs but no heat. The local repairman has contacted Magtag twice and had absolutely no help. He showed me the fax from Maytag technical support - the information was not responsive to the problem. After four trips to try and repair the unit, including a new control panel from Dallas shipped in ([$]), still no heat. The repairman has called friends and other sources and had no success with a solution. He is as frustrated as I am. Today he told me that he has practically rebuilt the dryer and still no heat. I DO NOT recommend this dryer or Maytag support. I will not buy Maytag to replace this dryer or any other Maytag product. It is obvious when speaking with technical support that the technician is reading from a script and has no idea about repair of the product. I wish I could give it zero stars as I now have a piece of expensive junk.

Comment:
I have not used steam on washing as much as on dryer. Very easy to use. I have issues with heavy towels not getting dry so I have to adjust for longer drying times and not auto dry. <br />It has a thumping noise that is irritating and it never stops. I ask repairman to fix and he fixed it.. till he left the house. I just have not called to get them here again.I have no regrets as this set is much better then the Fisher/Pykels I had for 4years.
