About - Maytag Centennial MEDC500V[W]

The Maytag Centennial MEDC500V[W] is part of the clothes dryer test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric dryer models like the Centennial MEDC500V[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Drying performance:
This score combines performance on three types of laundry loads of different sizes and fabric mixes: A 12-lb. load, predominantly cotton, representing a family's large weekly load; an 8-lb. load of cotton/polyester blend clothing; and a 3-lb. load of synthetic delicates, women's pajamas, nightgowns, bras and underwear.

Capacity:
Among the models we tested, drum volume varied from about 6 to 8.0 cu. ft.

Convenience:
For this measurement, we judged controls and ergonomics, such as ease of loading and unloading, servicing the lint filter, whether the door could clear a tall basket, and whether the machine has a raised edge to contain spills.

Comment:
This dryer works GREAT, BUT the lint filter system needs to be redesigned. As I write this, I have a repairman vacuuming out the inside of my dryer because the top loading lint filter has allowed HANDFULS of debris to fall into the back of the machine. The filter screen faces downward. When you pull it out to clean it, lint pieces can fall down inside the machine. This is the first dryer I have had that also allowed for an alarming amount of debris to build up in the vent duct work. Is this a fire hazard? As mentioned in another review of this machine, the lint filter is also messy to clean. Since it faces downward, it drops lint onto the top of the dryer as you pull the screen out. Also the door is awkward to open because of the size and vertical placement of the handle. This is the first Maytag that I have owned during the past 37 years that DOESN'T meet the high standards I have come to expect from the Maytag brand. Am I to expect Maytag is now a product in name only.

Comment:
I like this dryer. It looks good next to my older model Maytag washer. The only problem I have with this dryer is the lint screen. My old dryer had it in the front of the door. The first time I had to clean it I knew I didn't like it and I still have not gotten used to the mess it makes everytime do. I would never buy another dryer again with the lint screen at the top of the dryer.
