About - Whirlpool WED5500X[W]

The Whirlpool WED5500X[W] is part of the clothes dryer test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric dryer models like the WED5500X[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Drying performance:
This score combines performance on three types of laundry loads of different sizes and fabric mixes: A 12-lb. load, predominantly cotton, representing a family's large weekly load; an 8-lb. load of cotton/polyester blend clothing; and a 3-lb. load of synthetic delicates, women's pajamas, nightgowns, bras and underwear.

Capacity:
Among the models we tested, drum volume varied from about 6 to 8.0 cu. ft.

Convenience:
For this measurement, we judged controls and ergonomics, such as ease of loading and unloading, servicing the lint filter, whether the door could clear a tall basket, and whether the machine has a raised edge to contain spills.

Comment:
Side panels of unit get very hot in spots, yet the unit never completely dries the load. We have done lite loads to heavy loads and have never gotten a completely dry load. Some loads have damp clothes but some of the items will be excessively hot. Top of the unit is sloped, so nothing can be placed on top of the unit. The drum is very large, but the door opens down, so therefore it is difficult to access the back of the drum. We monitored the unit, tried different settings, cleaned out the full length of vent, and nothing changed the pitiful performance.

We bought the dryer at Costco with the matching washer. We frequently have to run the clothes two cycles in order to dry completely. We returned the washer too due to poor performance. See review
