About This Brand
Dyson is a relatively new brand in the U.S. market. With a very effective advertising campaign featuring its namesake owner and designer, Dyson entered the U.S. with a bang, quickly garnering a competitive share of sales. Ranging in price from $300 to $600, Dyson vacuums single-handedly increased the average price paid for uprights and created a new top-pricing tier in the mass market. Dyson focuses on innovation, technology, and design, and has connected with status-seeking consumers, making it the “It” brand of vacuums. Originally producing only uprights, Dyson has recently introduced a canister and a hand vacuum. The brand is available nationwide through major mass merchants such as Target, Best Buy, and Sears.
Bag Denotes whether the model has a disposable bag. A growing number of vacuums, particularly upright models, use a container that can be emptied eliminating the bag. However, to capture the fine-dirt particles, these models must use a filter (such as a HEPA filter), which can need regular cleaning, or replacement. Replacement filters tend to be significantly more expensive than bags. While vacuums with bags may also use filters, the bag acts as a prefilter that helps to keep the fine-dirt filter cleaner thus extending its performance between cleaning or replacement. Another caveat: Emptying the dustbin and cleaning a filter can be messy, and handling it may expose you to dust and other allergens.

Brush on/off An on/off switch for the rotating brush lets you stop the brush from rotating when using tools or cleaning bare floors. That helps eliminate scattered dirt on bare floors and reduces the risk of injury if the vacuum tips over in use. It also reduces the risk of damaging a carpet or floor if the vacuum sits in place on the low-height setting.

Easy on/off A switch that's located on the handle or where your foot can activate it is more convenient than one on the body of the vacuum.

Manual-pile adjust Adjusts the height of the machine to a carpet's pile height to allow for easy movement and thorough cleaning. Adjustments are automatic on some models, but we prefer the manual control afforded by some models.

We had a built in vacuum system that seemed to have good suction but we could not get the bits and pieces off the carpet. My wife would go on her hands and knees to try and pick these lint pieces up. With the Dyson we found that everything was picked up to the extent that we had to empty the canister three times the first time we cleaned our carpet...which is only in two bedrooms.
We had no idea how much dirt had accumulated over the years in the carpet fabric! And we vacuumed regularly...even with a new beater bar which obviously did not work all that well.
It does take a little getting used to, but then what new appliance doesn't?

Did excellent on hard floors - only have 1 area rug & seemed to work well on that. I have 2 cats, live in the country & it picked up everything, including the fine dust. It is easy to use & is so EASY to empty. I just LOVE it!!

I purchased this Dyson DC23 vacuum on a whim. My old vacuum needed replacing and a local wholesale store had a salesman who really sold the machine. Assembly was very easy, however the instructions were mostly pictures with few words. Eager to try it, I used it to vacuum my newly installed carpet. What a disappointment. The suction was very impressive, so much so that it was very difficult to push the turbine driven power head. Pulling it toward me was much easier. My wife tried it as well and we both agreed that it would be exhausting cleaning one room, let alone the entire house. To give it a fair chance, I moved to my large area rug. It performed okay, but it still seemed unusually hard to push the turbine head. Lastly, I tried it on our hardwood floors. This is where I believe the machine excels. With the ability to turn the beater bar off and the great suction, it worked well on the wood floors. With two dogs, the bag-less canister filled up quickly. The canister was easy to remove and dump all with one hand. The attachments are conveniently stored on the canister and easily attached/detached. The canister rolls easily on the floor behind you as you vacuum. The HEPA filters can be hand washed and thus never need replacing. I need a vacuum that will work equally well on carpet and hardwoods. I boxed up the vacuum hours after using it for first time and returned it.
