About This Brand
Hoover is positioned for the consumer who vacuums regularly and appreciates a deep clean. It introduced its first vacuum in 1907 and has established itself as one of the most recognizable brands in this country. More recently, Hoover was bought by TTI Floor Care, the owners of Dirt Devil, from Whirlpool. Hoover sells a wide variety of uprights in mass-market retailers, with models ranging in price from $50 to $300. It also makes hand and stick vacuums, canister models, deep cleaners, central vacuums, bare-floor cleaners, and an outdoor sweeper.
Hoover has a more established presence in canister vacuums and makes about a dozen models, priced from $80 to $300.
Features & Specs - Hoover Platinum Bagless Canister S3865
Bag Denotes whether the model has a disposable bag. A growing number of vacuums, particularly upright models, use a container that can be emptied eliminating the bag. However, to capture the fine-dirt particles, these models must use a filter (such as a HEPA filter), which can need regular cleaning, or replacement. Replacement filters tend to be significantly more expensive than bags. While vacuums with bags may also use filters, the bag acts as a prefilter that helps to keep the fine-dirt filter cleaner thus extending its performance between cleaning or replacement. Another caveat: Emptying the dustbin and cleaning a filter can be messy, and handling it may expose you to dust and other allergens.

Brush on/off An on/off switch for the rotating brush lets you stop the brush from rotating when using tools or cleaning bare floors. That helps eliminate scattered dirt on bare floors and reduces the risk of injury if the vacuum tips over in use. It also reduces the risk of damaging a carpet or floor if the vacuum sits in place on the low-height setting.

Easy on/off A switch that's located on the handle or where your foot can activate it is more convenient than one on the body of the vacuum.

Manual-pile adjust Adjusts the height of the machine to a carpet's pile height to allow for easy movement and thorough cleaning. Adjustments are automatic on some models, but we prefer the manual control afforded by some models.

The unit over heated repeatedly after only 15 min. of use. Manual said check for blockage and there was none. Hoover said take it to an authorized repair dealer. They checked and returned it. Still over heated so the service repair took it in saying it needed to be completely rebuilt. After THREE weeks still waiting on parts from Hoover. I will never buy another Hoover product. Over 400 dollars for a vacuum and instead of replacing it I am told to take it in for repair after two weeks of use and then three months of back and forth waiting on parts I am forced to buy a second vacuum to clean my house. Rest assured it will not be a Hoover product.

Comment:
My husband purchased this vacuum since it got good reviews from Consumer Reports. It is TERRIBLE on wood floors. My old Dyson canister vacuum that is 8 years old is breaking but I vacuum almost daily (3 children, cat, dog) so he surprised me with a new vacuum. It works well on carpeting but the entire 1st floor of our house is wood/tile and I still drag out my old Dyson for the wood/tile. I was really hoping this would be good for carpet AND hard floors. I am going to purchase the Dyson DC23 for my hard floors. For the $ he spent I would have purchased a less expensive vacuum just for carpets. It is also difficult to clean. Dirt builds up in the canister that you can NOT get out!

Comment:
I had a Dyson DC14 animal upright but decided to get a canister vacuum and, based on consumer report reviews, decided to get the Hoover. I actually purchased 2 of these vacuums and one is quieter than the Dyson, one is not (one has a high pitched whining noise). Within 4 months the hose connection on one of the Hoover machines died (the one that is quieter) and it has now been in the shop for 3 weeks waiting on a replacement hose. I have 2 dogs, 2 cats and live in the desert (lots of hair, dust and sand). I was expecting more from the vacuum than what it picked up. While it's not bad (average would be my overall opinion) the Dyson is by far better. I actually purchased a Dyson DC23 animal canister vacuum while waiting for the Hoover to come back and plan to sell at least of these Hoovers as the Dyson has SOOOOOOO much better suction and picks up about twice as much as the Hoover. The Dyson is also lighter, has much nicer attachments (they are lower so get under furniture much easier), gets corners and edges better, and is easier to pull along while vacuuming.
While there are pros and cons with every machine, the Dyson wins hands down for suction and attachments. The Hoover's small rotary tool is awesome for cleaning the carpet in our car.
Overall, the extra $100 I spent on the Dyson was worth every penny and I would recommend the Dyson over the Hoover any time.
