About - Amana NFW7300W[W]

The Amana NFW7300W[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the NFW7300W[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
Not high use. Like that it spins almost dry. Like that we can wash bedding, pillows etc in it.
The cycle selector - start pause knob has failed but never worked well. Turns out it is part of the user interface board which controls just about everything and costs $325. plus tax plus tech time. Very disappointed. While trying to track this down I ran into many reviews and comments from other customers which show any number of serious issues with this machine. Wondering how long CU tests items why so many rated items I have purchased recently have failed.

Comment:
I bought this Amana 7300 after hours of research and great consideration of all ratings that were available at that time. Replacing an almost useless Calypso, I had already been looking for several years for a good machine when the Calypso died. I tried to wait until something really good came on the market, but finally had to choose, and this seemed the best in a reasonable price range. This machine is a real disappointment, but I think it reflects more poorly on the EPA than on the Amana per se.
The machine would be efficient on water and soap (but not on electricity) if it did what I expect a washer to do, but the cycles are long, especially when I have to reset the machine for extra rinse cycles. The advertizing said extra rinse was available, but it didn't say that you have to babysit the machine to make it do that extra rinse.
By the time all is said and done, I have used more water and more electricity than ANY washer I've owned in over 30 years.

I had to purchase another pair of jeans so that I would have a balanced load - one pair of jeans does not wash well and if you put jeans in with underwear, the softer fabric is beaten to death by the harder jean fabric. That may be a front loader issue, but it certainly didn't make me happy to have to buy more clothes to outwit the washer.

The machine doesn't rinse well. Period. The incident that has triggered my writing this review was today's load of shirts - I have put the machine on extra rinse for the 3rd time in order to get out the soap. I use the HE detergents, haved tried several brands, and am now using only 1 TEASPOON of detergent per full load of shirts (6-8) and they STILL require multiple rinses. It has taken over 3 hours for this wash load with me tending it and having to observe each spin cycle to see it the soap is out. I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER.

The duration of the cycles is longer than advertized by about 10 minutes. The only short cycle is the extra rinse. Fat lot of good that does. One of the reasons I purchased this washer was the supposedly shorter wash time. I don't wallow in the mud most days, so I don't accrue extreme dirt and don't need an extreme washer cycle. Nonetheless, by the time I get one load done it has been WELL PAST the advertised cycle time.

The next load today will be towels and I have learned NOT to add ANY soap on these as they apparently make their own. (I even tested my well water to see if there was something in it that would make suds - but it is definitely the washer.)

This washer does get the clothes cleaner than the Calypso, but only because I MAKE it get them cleaner.

Shirt collars...give up clean. Perhaps if I pretreated, they might come clean. But I refuse to spend more time prepping clothes and who knows how many more rinses it would take to get that stuff out.

Because I have a bad back, we put this machine on the ridiciulously expensive pedestal so I wouldn't be lifting low weight. Despite 2 attempts to adjust it, the vibration is enough to set the dogs to barking and I occasionally have to push the perambulating duo back into their spot. Not good for the back. Certainly not good for my mood.

This washer is a huge disappointment. I'm not sure if I should hope it has a short life or not. Buying a new washer might bring more misery.

Comment:
Just wanted to let people know that the 7200 model which probably is the model before this one has a poor door attachment issue. This washer is less then 3 years old the hinge has broking where it attaches to the washer. Had the door and hinge replaced and 6 months later it has happened again. The repairs are approaching the value of the washer at this point without trying to fix it a second time. Amana said they were sorry but there is nothing they can do as it is out of warranty. If I would like they can provide me the name of a repair person in my area..Really...The washer that this one replaced lasted 15 years....VERY disappointing. It HAS a factory issue, not one the consumer should have to pay for.
