About - Maytag 5000 Series MHWE450W[ ]

The Maytag 5000 Series MHWE450W[ ] is a front-loading washing machine available from Maytag. The 5000 Series MHWE450W[ ] typically costs $820 .

Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on front-loading washing machine models like the 5000 Series MHWE450W[ ].

Energy star:
The federal Energy Star program, administered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, identifies a wide range of home appliances that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. These appliances can help you use less energy at home and save money on your utility bills.

Stainless-steel tub:
Tubs constructed of stainless steel are likely to be more durable than plastic or porcelain, and they allow for higher spin speeds. Plastic is the next most durable choice.

Auto temp. control:
This feature automatically mixes hot and cold water to reach the chosen wash temperature (which differs on various makes of washers). It's a good way to compensate for normal variations in tap-water temperature and prevents problems caused by water that's too cold, which keeps detergent from working properly.

Purchased this machine in June 2010. In less than a year, it started sounding like the proverbial jet taking off in the spin cycle.

Called for service, and the entire tub assembly was replaced under warranty. Although I was never told explicitly, the repair receipt indicates that there was a recall. Apparently a lot of them, since it took more than a month to get the parts. The listed price for the parts replaced was 1.4 times the original cost of the whole washer!

Now, less than a year after the warranty work, the same problem is happening again. It is clear there is a fundamental problem with the design of this machine. However Maytag will not acknowledge this. The new parts were warranted for only 90 days, long since expired. And they claim there have not been sufficient reports of problems to warrant a recall. (I googled up pages of exactly the same complaint while I was on hold with them.) They recommend purchasing their extended service agreement at $300/yr (1/3 the original cost of the washer).

Thanks, but no thanks. I've been buying Maytag appliances since I bought my first house. But no longer.

Washer purchased on October 4, 2011. Died in early March so called Maytag customer support. They scheduled service call by Central Repair Tech for Wednesday afternoon March 20th. Rep didn't show up but called and said knew what problem was and would have to order new outer and inner tubs plus parts to install these items and it would probably be a month before they could get parts and be out to fix washer. I told him that was unacceptable and he said I only fix them and you will have to call Maytag Customer Care to complain. I called Customer Care back and talked with 2 Care Managers and got no help and they would not let me talk to anyone else at Maytag. So, I have purchased a new LG washer and it will be installed next Tuesday. I will sell or donate the Maytag when and if it's ever repaired. I will never purchase an other Whirlpool/Maytag product. I suggest anyone think long and hard before purchasing any Whirlpool/Maytag products based on this experience. Apparently they don't care about repeat business and hope to make money on one time sales with lots of extended warranty. THEY DO NOT MANUFACTURE RELIABLE PRODUCTS OR PROVIDE ACCEPTABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT, BUY ELSEWHERE!

We purchased this Maytag washer on 10/4/2011 and it failed this month. Called Maytag customer service and they said they would have a service rep from Central Repair come out Wednesday afternoon, 3/21/2011. Rep didn't come but called to say he new what the problem was they have seen a lot of these. Had to order new inner and outer tubs and associated parts to replace these. He said it would take 2 to 4 weeks to get these parts. Called Maytag customer service back and basically got no help. This problem is the latest of several with Whirlpool/Maytag products which include a Maytag dishwasher that had to be replaced because of a fire issue and a Whirlpool washer that failed in late September 2011. I will be purchasing a new washer from LG and will donate or sell the defective Maytag unit when it is repaired in a month or so. I would highly recommend that anyone purchasing a Whirlpool/Maytag product do so with the upmost care and consideration because their quality and customer support is very poor. If you do keep you fingers and toes crossed. I will not be buying anymore Whirlpool/Maytag products.
