About - Maytag Performance Series 2000 MHWE251Y[G] (Lowe's)

The Maytag Performance Series 2000 MHWE251Y[G] (Lowe's) is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the Performance Series 2000 MHWE251Y[G] (Lowe's) are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
Within a year, the so-called gear gave out. Machine leaks. Was paid by warranty company for a new one. Wouldn't want another Maytag, but the unit is stacked. in order to replace it, i would have to have two different colors. Disgusted.

Comment:
3 months after purchase the outer bin broke and started to make loud noises when on high supper spin. Then got FL and all sorts of error codes. Called Lowes got it all fix for free. Now got error codes and its making the same noise again. This machine is good for a small family light loads only. We are a family of four ages 6 and 7 and two adults with a large dog. We wash full loads and I believe this is why this machine can't handle our needs.

Comment:
This is a horrible product, and I was an idiot to rely on the Maytag name without looking at CR. Here are the problems: 1) design is poor because socks and underwear can get stuck in the sealing gasket channel; 2) bleach can be distributed in the NEXT load, because the reservoir won't empty out; 3) I've had at least 4 shirts chewed up in past 3 months, and I don't overfill the tub; and 4) the coup de grace is that the rubber gasket itself is now disintegrating, leaving a dusty film on all clothes washed. This is a piece of junk. The good news? I'm having an LG delivered tomorrow, and this thing -- still under warranty -- will go to the junk heap, where it belongs.
