About - Maytag Performance Series MHWE950W[W]

The Maytag Performance Series MHWE950W[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the Performance Series MHWE950W[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
This machine ran perfectly for 4 months after buying it in March 2011. After the well advertised jet engine howl started in August, the inner/outer tub were replaced under warranty in Sept. Ran great for 3 months and had inner/outer tubs and water pump replaced today. Dead giveaway when the service tech showed both times with the parts on his truck already knowing what the problem was. I feel for you reviewers who had to wait for parts. We are a family of 3 with moderate washer usage. This has cost me days off for repair and warranty expires in 2 months so I a sure within 6 I will be looking for a new washer. It will not be a Maytag. That said, American Appliance in DesMoines has done a great job being prompt with repairs and having parts on the truck. Interesting that the positive reviews on this product are from people who have owned them for 6 months or less. Go Figure.

Comment:
I hardly ever have to do laundry anymore! The capacity is so large I can usually wash all my husbands and my clothes in 2-3 loads once every week and a half! It cleans very well and spins clothes nearly dry so that the drying time is 40 minutes or less, even for a very large load.

It has so many different cycle options. The normal setting does great, and I like the bulky items for my comforters and the hand wash cycle for some of my sweaters and delicate items. The quick wash cycle works well for small - medium sized loads, though I don't often need to use it.

Like some reviewers, I have noticed that the spin cycle at the higher speeds seems to have gotten a bit noisier in the past couple of months, but it may be that I just notice it more because I happen to be near the machine more often; my machine is just off the kitchen. The machine itself has only moved a slight distance while spinning once that I can remember, and I was probably washing rugs at the time, causing it to be off-balance. The noisy spinning doesn't make my machine walk around, though sometimes it makes clothes I have on top slide off. I don't think it's any louder than any other machine I have ever used.

I still love my washer and the steam dryer (MEDE500VW) that I bought to go with it. It isn't the companion model but the next one down, as it was nearly the same, cost a little less and actually got a better review.

My daughter is looking for a new W/D pair, so even after looking at the higher rated models (by number), comparing the red dots and reviews, this still seems like the best model, and I am recommending it.

Loved my Maytag Neptune Front loader but not enough to spend another $1100 for a new one after only 6 yrs. of use!!! To repair the motor & circuit board I was quoted $1000. Just ordered my new Speed Queen today. My Maytag was made by Samsung but now is owned by Whirlpool...what more can I say??
