About - Maytag Performance Series MHWE950W[W]

The Performance Series MHWE950W[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the Performance Series MHWE950W[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

I can't believe how far technology has brought the washing machine. Maytag has done it again. We have owned Maytag washer/dryers for some 30 years now, and this washing machine makes doing laundry actually a joy. These machines are so attractive that we took the doors off our laundry room and decorated the room around them!

We were worried about some of the mildew and cleaning issues associated with front loaders. We spent at the high end of our budget thinking that the steam and washer cleaning cycles would minimize these issues and they have. The only minor con is the washer is noisier than we anticipated, but our expectations may of been too high.

This is our first front loader and we were somewhat concerned about some of the issues we read about. We went to the high side of our budget to try to avoid cleaning and mildew issues. This Maytag is proving itself with steam and washer cleaning cycles. Although it has a quiet operation option it is more noisy than I anticipated, but my expectation may have been too high. We put an extended warranty on the machine due to the electronics and complexity added with the many wash options. So far so good!
