About - Maytag Centennial MVWC400X[W]

The Maytag Centennial MVWC400X[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the Centennial MVWC400X[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
Bought machine new and used it on day it was delivered. Loud growling noise during wash cycle, motor smells overheated. Contacted store to see if this was normal break-in period adjustments. They said they would send out an expert on Monday, this happened on Saturday. Monday was notified I would have to contact Maytag. Did so, but could not schedule a repair man for Monday. Have to wait until Thursday due to my schedule and then he will be here between 8am and noon. Have to use Laundro-Mat until then because odor of this machine is so offensive. After reading all the bad reviews on this machine am reluctant to keep it, but will certainly NOT be buying the matching dryer or any other Maytag appliance. Have owned Kenmore for the last 30 years but thought I would try Maytag because relative recommened it. They bought the agitator machine and really like it. Maybe I can get Maytag to substitute this one for an agitator type. The HE machine seems to be extremely delicate and time-consuming to operate. I do not want to have to be a rocket scientist to do a load of laundry!

We use the machine weekly mainly for bedding, towels, casual clothing. There is nothing Great. The machine came broken, banging and unable to balance loads. Eventually it started dancing. I had repairman respond 5 times. Replaced tub didn't work. They replaced several other parts nothing worked. They said my floor was too weak. Tried to get Maytag and [@] to give me a new machine they refused. They finally replaced lower support frame and it stopped dancing, either that or my floor got stronger. It has been 6 months and it's starting to move again or my floor is needing vitamins.I owned a Maytag and Speed Queen for nearly 30 years all worked great and were made in USA. These machines don't save energy when you add in all the gas the repairmen use coming to your home. I will go to a second hand store next time (soon) and buy an antique. It can't be any worse that the junk I have now.

Comment:
I have had this machine for a little over a year. Within this period, there is no hot water and I have 2 major breakdowns at the same time.

First of all, the hot cycle is more of a cold cycle. There is NO HOT WATER! Secondly, my gear box and my timer are both broken. There has not been any over use or heavy duty cleaning, just your average family use.

For this being a rather new machine the mfg will no longer cover any repairs. The timer is cheaply made from plastic and the cost to replace/repair both the gear box and timer is more than the cost to purchase a brand new machine. Here I go the appliance store again to drain my savings, but I will not purchase another Whirlpool product ever again! It is sad to see that the mfg will not issue a recall after all of the complaints or help consumers

Clothes are not clean; patches of the clothes do not even get wet!
This water saving machine leaves residue on clothes forcing you to re-wash 2 & 3 times so in the end, you are using more water and wasting more time on laundry. Using 1 or 2 spoons of detergent, like recommended, gets you the same results. I spoke with the manufacturer at least 8 times and have had service a half a dozen times and they find nothing wrong with the machine. On each occasion, they recommended something different and I have tried them all. Use less detergent; try less clothes; wipe out the inside with a damp cloth; try running hot water first; put detergent in-let machine fill-then add clothes; place clothes around center as if there were an agitator; use affresh tablets after every few loads and they even had me run an empty load with white vinegar. Nothing works!! I also notice dry streaks and patches on the finished load where the clothes are not even wet! If I could, I wouldnt even give it 1 star. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS WASHER!!
