White crib in baby room

Crib buying guide

Of all the items you'll need for your baby, a crib is one of the most challenging to choose. There's a wide array of styles and price ranges. Unlike bassinets, cradles, and bedside sleepers, cribs are the only beds for babies that are required to meet federal government mandated standards.

Brands

Whatever style crib you choose, you'll want one that's durable, safe, and that matches your taste and budget. With so many recent crib recalls—more than 2.5 million cribs in 2008 alone—you might also want to check the company's track record in recalls and how they have handled them. A quick search of the recalls section of the Web site of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.gov) will yield that information. Use these profiles to compare cribs by brand.
