The Volvo XC60 joins a growing niche of compact luxury SUVs that already includes the Acura RDX, BMW X3, and the newcomers Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Vehicles in this class tend to offer luxury similar to their more-expensive siblings, but in a smaller and more fuel-efficient package.
The five-passenger XC60 is powered by a standard 281-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and drives all four wheels. A broad array of advanced safety features, some unique to Volvo, are available. By choosing those we raised our test car's price to $42,245, from its $37,200 base.

The XC60 accelerates eagerly. The six-speed automatic shifts smoothly and without hesitation. We've measured 17 mpg overall in mixed driving, just 1 mpg better than the 311-hp V8-powered XC90 we tested. That's not so good but unlike its competitors, at least it's on regular fuel.
Handling is sound but nothing special. Though well weighted and communicative, the steering doesn't respond especially quickly. The ride is better than that in most Volvos, but it's still stiff. The cabin is commendably quiet.
The cabin is very well constructed, but has a rather austere ambience. The seats are very comfortable and well shaped and the rear is adequately roomy. Integrated second-row booster seats are helpful for families with children.

The $2,695 Technology Package includes adaptive cruise control, auto braking, and collision and lane-departure warning systems. Oddly, it lacks blind-spot-warning and rear-camera systems. Drivers have found the active cruise to be one of the best, operating without much drama. The low-speed collision-warning system sounds an alert and even applies the brakes if you're about to bump into the car ahead. It usually worked well, but once triggered its chime unnecessarily.
While not as exciting to drive as some of its competitors, overall, the Volvo XC60 is a pleasant vehicle. As the newest member of Volvo's line it, showcases the company's latest safety advances.
