In addition to the November 2007
luxury sedans tests, we also performed a two-car face-off of two ultra-luxury sedans. The new Lexus LS 460L priced at $76,572, and the $90,200
Mercedes-Benz S550. Both received major redesigns for 2007 and are the most popular models in their class.
Both models provide the highest levels of comfort, quietness, roominess, and luxury features. The LS, however, delivers notably
better fuel economy--21 mpg vs. 17--and easy, more intuitive controls, but it's not particularly agile or fun to drive. The
Mercedes-Benz S550 had more agile handling, better steering feel, and a slight edge in ride comfort and acceleration. But
its complicated controls can be frustrating.
Luxury cars are also often equipped with innovations and safety features well before they are integrated into less expensive
models. For example, our LS 460L came with the first eight-speed automatic transmission and an Advanced Parking Guidance System
that can automatically park the car if conditions are right. The S550 features a night-vision system that helps a driver see
people and animals that are beyond the reach of the headlights. Both systems are interesting, but they have their drawbacks.
