By far the biggest selling brand, with more than 50 percent of the market. Based in Olathe, Kan., Garmin was founded in 1989, and today it has 7,000 employees. Garmin GPS navigators have consistently scored near or at the top of our ratings. In addition to portable GPS units, Garmin makes a variety of fitness training devices and products for marine and aviation use. The company announced plans to sell its own telephone with built-in navigation two years ago, but the scheduled release date has been pushed back several times. |

Comment:
On my way to the Coors Plant in Colorado it routed me to what it showed as a dead end which was actually a fenced in cow pasture. Then when I went by it. All it tried to do was get me to make a U-Turn and go back to that imaginary street which it called 1st Ave. I had to put it on map and figure out the route myself. Sometimes it will bring you out of the way to go on a long route. No brand or model of these things are accurate all the time. Sometimes it brings me to nothing and says I'm at my destination. Usually I'm somewhere around it though. Then I have to put it on map and figure it out. But all in all it is worth having and does make life easier. 90% of the time it works great. I have talked to other owners who have gps's and they all have similar complaints about their units no matter what the brand. Traffic is free and worth having and the adds are non-obtrusive. They come up for maybe 30 to 60 seconds are small and never come on when you are moving.

Comment:
battery life was 20 minutes and decreasing. Aquiring a satellite lock often was 10 to 15 minutes. Previously had the nuvi 660 and it was a fine unit, received even inside buildings and battery life wsa 3+ hours. I decided to upgrade to get the great features available on the 765. Fortunatly, I bought the 765 at [@] and after a year and a half of frustration and dealing with Garmin customer service, I returned it and [@] allowed that. I bought the nuvi 1490, which was less expensive and has all of the features. It is a good GPS.

Have owned 3 different Garmin products.
Bought this one new. Product unreliable out of the box. Bad guidance ( wrong direction on one way streets); bad routing ( 1 1/2 hrs for 30 min. trip) hard to charge ( difficult connection with mount plug-in). C/S replaced with reman. unit. Continued charging problems. C/S offered to replace connecter cord with a generic replacement without the FM antenna after warranty expired ( never solved existing problem while in warranty). Replaced it with different Manufacturer and am very happy with it.

Used Garmin for skeet shooting.

Strength
Fast boot up times. Display is easy to read. Good price on sale.
Weakness
Misses location. Gives commands to turn a little late at times. Short battery life making it usless for portability.
This thing is a mixed bag. Many good points, not quite as many bad points. Sometimes this thing is dead on the money. Too often tho, it says turn right/left just as you pass the intersection. Other times it says to turn left/right a little too early. Love the display in bright light and in the dark. Updates for new maps takes an eternity, so be patient, nothing is wrong with your computer. I'd advise doing updates just before going to bed and it should be finished by the next morning!!My original nuvi 360 was the best and most reliable GPS I've ever used. Not sure why they couldn't just build on that one, but, the 7xx series has been eaten up with bugs. Be sure to update ASAP after you purchase it. It does take care of lots of bugs, but not all.

Strength
A lot of fluff that isn't that useful for a dedicated navigation aid.
Weakness
Very hard to update with out a very fast internet connection, even with their update disk.
I purchased this unit and attempted to update the software.I have a very slow internet connection where I live, I finally reached a CS agent after 45 minutes on hold, who said they would send me a disk with the update.Got Disk, attempted to update, 6 hours on line and still notcomplete.Discontinued update attempt and am using the installed maps.Sorry Garmin, I'll be looking at another company for my nextGPS.

Strength
Good display
Weakness
FM traffic monitor
The FM traffic monitor is totally unreliable. I can sit in traffic with no warning of any problem, and the device will identify heavy congestion when I am cruising at 65 mph. Tech support is useless
