I purchased this GPS online for only [$], Its a pretty good little GPS.I have used it several times over the last 2 months and I say it is well worth the price. The only thing i didnt like about it was It doesnt have as detailed a POI database compared to other GPS's(you might not find every hotel, motel , or restaurant in it).Still, its small, fairly decent battery life, light, durable, loud and clear voice, fairly quick, pretty sensitive satellite antenna( it sometimes works indoors better than other brands ive tried), and its as cheap as they come , yet still does what it claims to do.The 3.5 inch screen MIGHT be hard to see for people with bad eyesight. but the average 4.3 inch widescreen GPS's arent that much bigger.Highly Recommended

Comment:
Purchased as our second GPS; also own a (more expensive) Garmin Nuvi 760. Given that the Magellan Roadmate 1220 was our budget purchase, I expected to find it more frustrating than the Nuvi 760, but found myself pleasantly surprised by it's speed and ease of use.

Speed

The Roadmate 1220 consistently acquires satellite information more quickly than the Nuvi 760; once it boots up, I rarely have to wait for it to locate my current position and plot my route. With either GPS, when I do have to wait, the wait can drag on for minutes. Thankfully, the waits are very infrequent with the Roadmate 1220. Route plotting on the Roadmate 1220 is much faster than on the Nuvi 760.

Ease of Use

As you enter information into the Roadmate 1220, it minimizes typos by graying out invalid letters and numbers. On the Nuvi 760, you first have to choose the State for your destination (e.g., New York), then enter in the address information.

When I miss a turn on the Roadmate 1220, it quickly and quietly reroutes my trip. The Nuvi 760, on the other hand, announces that I have goofed with an annoying Recalculating. This is especially annoying on those occasions when I purposefully ignore the GPS due to my greater familiarity with my local traffic patterns.

Room for Improvement

Despite my love of the Roadmate 1220, there are a few areas where I think Magellan can improve the product, including:

* GPS Coordinate Entry: you are not able to enter in GPS (i.e. Latitude/Longitude) coordinates, which is helpful if the street name you are searching for is not in the database and you have GPS coordinates from Google Maps or other online mapping software.

* Display Brightness and Contrast: the screen is hard to read in bright sunlight, so you may find yourself adjusting the angle of the display or cupping your hand over the display to compensate.

* Software Glitch: the Roadmate 1220 occasionally overwrites your Home Address information. This has only happened to me when I have plotted multi-destination trips that included my Home Address.

* Battery Life and Management: the battery lasts little more than an hour with my preferred settings. The Roadmate 1220 offers no battery life indicator. When the battery runs low, the Roadmate 1220 silently posts a ten-second warning on the screen, and then shuts down unless you tell it otherwise; if you don't happen to look at the screen when the warning pops up, you'll find yourself rebooting the Roadmate 1220 during the middle of a trip. Thankfully, when it restarts, it asks you if you wish to continue the trip you were on when it shut down, so you don't have to re-enter in all the destination information.

Conclusion

The Roadmate 1220 is great value for the money and outperforms our other GPS in certain key areas.
