Comment:
Just take it out of the box, plug it into your computer for the FREE map update and go! These GPS units by TomTom are generally the least expensive and in my opinion are as good or better that any other high end unit. Everything that you need and nothing you don't need.

Comment:
I use this product in NYC mainly and tried to see how it would take me to the Botanic Gardens and I ended up at a housing project miles away from the gardens. I went to France and had to dump (backup and erase) the USA map. In France (Southwest) it had none of the newer highways. I'm not sure what the updates are supposed to be doing. Then when I returned and tried to restore the USA map it didn't work and Tom Tom would not support my needs since my map update subscription had expired.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

Comment:
The TomTom 140 does not announce street names, but I find this quite adequate.. It is sufficient to be reminded where to turn several times,as this model does, rather than have to search for a street name while watching traffic. So far I have never missed a destination with this GPS even though it doesn't announce street names. Often in the center of large cities, street names are obscured anyway.
A common problem with most GPS's is when searching for a large office building or hotel in the center of a large city one is told that you have arrived at your destination, but available parking is unknown and one then begins a blind search for parking.
