About - Garmin GPSMap 60CSx

The Garmin GPSMap 60CSx is part of the GPS test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, handheld hiking GPS models like the GPSMap 60CSx are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Guidance:
Guidance is based on the unit's features that aid in guiding a user on an outdoor excursion.

Geocaching:
Geocaching rates the system's compatibility and function related to this form of GPS-enabled treasure hunting. Score includes how a user loads the geocache location to the unit, what information is displayed (coordinates, comments, description, clues, difficulty, terrain, cache size), and the manner that geocaches are listed (name or code).

Power:
Power reflects battery life as measured by testing units on full brightness with power-saving modes turned off. All tests were done with alkaline AA batteries.
About This Brand

By far the biggest selling brand, with more than 50 percent of the market. Based in Olathe, Kan., Garmin was founded in 1989, and today it has 7,000 employees. Garmin GPS navigators have consistently scored near or at the top of our ratings. In addition to portable GPS units, Garmin makes a variety of fitness training devices and products for marine and aviation use. The company announced plans to sell its own telephone with built-in navigation two years ago, but the scheduled release date has been pushed back several times.

Comment:
I use this GPS as a road GPS and for work to map points for transects, boundaries, and location of items (plants and wildlife). It has what I need and works when I need it to. I am not big into bells and whistles I just need a device that is reliable and accurate and this GPS does the job for me. All Garmins more or less use the same software so the main difference come to down to features (MP3 player, camera, etc built in). You can get Topo maps for this GPS and other specialized maps but the down side is you can't overlay one type of map over another (i.e- regular road map with topo features). Hopefully one day their will be a GPS that will let you add layers so you can have a road map with topo features and marine features all in one.

Comment:
There were six aircrew and sailors in HMCS CALGARY as part of CTF 150 supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the Arabian Sea using the GPSMAP 60CSx. As far as I know the only GPS units on board, aside from the military supplied units, were the Garmin units. Surprisingly, everyone bought the same model independently (says wonders about the reputation of this unit). I bought mine from gpscity.ca and was very happy with the service and delivery time to Victoria, BC. The unit itself is robust, dependable, and up to the rigors of military use soakings, accidental drops, etc. Most of us use it as a portable backup on both the water and in the helicopter. The reception and accuracy is frankly amazing. The mapping software for the area is accurate and reliable and really helps with our situational awareness with merely a glance - something that is very useful when in the air or conducting a complex at sea evolution. Battery life is very good - occasionally getting 20 hours off one set on Duracell NiMH. When ashore it is very useful as well - How can you get lost in a new port when you have routing software that takes you right to the destination - or at the very least enables you to tell the cabbie which way to go. Overall this unit is highly recommended and there are at least six of us who can attest to this.

Strength
Great accuracy; easy to use; electronic compass; great battery life
Weakness
Maps cost too much
Great GPS. Picks up satellites real quick and is very accurate. I use it for Geocaching and love the ablity to upload caches right from the website. Saves a ton of time. The electrinoc compass is nice when caching. You can stand still and it finds north for you. So far the only flaws has to be the price of the optional maps. Way too expensive. I'm impressed with the battery life of the two AA's. It's a lot better than my old Megellan 315 that was only black and white. So far no complaints, but my wife hasn't seen the bill for the topo maps yet!

Strength
Portable, good reception, adaptable with bicycle use (withaccesory holder), rugged case.
Weakness
Expensive software ($200 for Street maps and Topo map).Inaccurate at time.
This GPS (60 CSx) provided good directions most of the time. However, on a recent trip to Norfolk Virginia, the GPScould not find the last leg to the airport (about a mile out).Last week, on a bike ride, the Topo map did not find a road that was out there for many years.

Strength
Satellite aquisition speed in Remote Upper Michigan
Weakness
Belt clip is flimsey - falls off too easily
I bought this unit for deer hunting this year in Upper Michigan - November 2007. Excellent aquisition speed, super tracking and waypoint ease, good button use with one hand while walking in the woods.Threw my old Magellen away since it just could not pick up the sats.Great for hunting in remote areas where orientation loss can occur. Great electronic compass
