It's all in the details

Close but no cigar
Upconverting DVD players add pixels to a standard-definition image, but they don’t match Blu-ray.

Upconverting DVD players promise high-definition-like quality from regular DVDs, but they don’t produce actual high-definition video. HD images on a Blu-ray disc contain 1920x1080 pixels, so you can see very fine detail, such as the texture of a tweed suit. Images on a standard DVD are made up of only 720x480 pixels. An upconverting player adds “filler” pixels to bump up the resolution, and that can smooth jagged edges and clarify existing detail. But the upconverted video doesn’t contain any more detail and isn’t as lifelike as true high-definition.
