About - Sony SLT-A35K

The SLT-A35K is a 16-megapixel camera with a kit lens that has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27mm-82.5mm. It has a live-view 2.9-inch LCD (921,600 pixels). It also includes an electronic viewfinder, which is helpful when composing in bright light.

Because it accepts interchangeable lenses but does not have a mirror and through-the-lens viewfinder, we consider this model an SLR-like camera.

The camera's kit lens has a maximum aperture of f/3.5. The camera's shutter speed range is 30 seconds to 1/4000 of a second.

The SLT-A35K stores photos and video on SD/SDHC/SDXC/MemoryStick Duo memory cards but has no on-board storage. It captures images as JPG or RAW files at a top resolution of 4912 x 3264 and full HD-resolution video as MTS, MP4 files at a top resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Like most digital cameras, this model comes with a proprietary rechargeable battery.

This SLR-like has 15 autofocus points. It also includes 4 flash modes (for the on-board flash), 15 exposure modes, and an exposure compensation control that can be set at +/-2 EV. The image stabilization system for this camera is body-based.

The SLT-A35K measures 5.1 inches wide by 3.9 inches high by 6.1 inches deep, and weighs 25 ounces (1.6 pounds) (with battery, memory card, and strap).

About This Brand

Sony offers innovations at relatively high prices. Cyber-shot compacts and subcompacts offer distinctions such as touch screens and sleek bodies. The W and WX series are budget lines. At the high-end are H and HX series compacts, and premium T and TX series subcompacts. Sony has expanded its SLR series significantly and offers cameras for every advanced camera user and budget, including models that have very large, full-frame sensors and special features, such as a High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature. It also has a wide range of lenses. Its SLR-like NEX series models include key SLR features, such as interchangeable lenses, but will have the small size and weight of a point-and-shoot. Sony has 3D technology on select basic and advanced cameras but it is limited to its special panorama models.

Comment:
The Sony website clearly states the Alpha35 works with the wireless remote controller. Sony agrees that this, is so. The Alpha 35 does not appear to do so. Sony has had the issue for several weeks and they can't come to agreement whether or not it should or should not work with this remote. I hope to hear soon as to the final answer and Sony's resolution.

Comment:
I needed a camera that could shoot video, yet still take advantage of my old (but still fantastic) Minolta glass. The only option for my requirements and budget was the Sony A33/35/55 line. The 33 has been discontinued (though you can still find it) with the 35 taking its place.

When comparing the 55 to the 35 you'll notice that the 35 does not have GPS or a pivoting LCD. My theory: if Sony equipped the a35 with those two features, there would be no point in continuing to carry the a55 on the roster. Sure, the 55 gives you 10 fps burst versus 7 fps burst of the a35, but the a35 has superior sensor tech. That equates to a wash. If you must have a pivoting LCD or GPS, then go for the a55: you'll pay a $150 premium, but you won't be disappointed in it. However, if you don't need those features, the a35's updated tech make it a no-brainer imho.

A final thought: I don't understand CR's comparative video ratings of the a33/a55 versus the a35. I tested all three side by side and found no significant differences in the video quality among them. In fact, the a33 and a55 have well documented overheating issues in video mode that have been addressed with the release of the a35.
