Comment:
This has a 1 sensor which is much larger than the usual 1/2.5 or somewhat better 1/1.7 sensor in compact cameras. Because of this larger sensor the sensitivity and resolution are far superior to virtually all of the compact cameras (the Panasonic LX7 comes closest). The still image quality rivals larger dSLR cameras (with APS-C sensors) in all respects except low light performance.
Video features and quality are also excellent outperforming virtually all cameras in its class and above. For technical info look up dxomark.

Comment:
I have owned my RX100 for a little over a month and use it primarily for people pictures, such as birthdays and other family events when I don't want or need to carry around my Sony A57.

I have found this to be a wonderful point and shoot camera and feel it is the best in its class at this time. The combination of a bright f/1.8 lens and very large (for its size) sensor provides crisp brilliant photos with impressive bokeh. The RX100 is not a DSLR and shouldn't really be compared to one, although the quality is good enough that many people do. The video quality is also superb. I try to avoid using flash, so I particularly like the low-light capability of this camera. However, in the event that I need some extra light, the flash flips upwards so that it can be bounced for softer lighting - brilliant!

This is a point and shoot of exceptional quality and extremely fast performance. I shoot mainly aperture priority, but have also used the auto mode and found it to be accurate almost every time, which would make this a very easy camera for a beginner to use. I also like that the menu system is the same as my Sony A57, which is convenient if you are a Sony SLT owner.

It is expensive, but it truly illustrates the old saying that you get what you pay for. I would highly recommend this camera for anyone that wants high quality photos (and video) in a pocketable package.
