Summary:This model has been tested by our experts.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS is part of the SLR lens
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, SLR lens
models like the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
Image quality:
Image quality is based on tests of sharpness (modulation transfer function), geometric distortion, reflexes within the lens (flare), veiling glare index, vignetting, and macro performance.
Modulation transfer function:
This is a measure of lens performance and shows how well a lens reproduces object detail in the image it produces.
Geometric distortion:
All lenses have degrees of geometric distortion, which will depict straight lines as slightly curved. Two most common types are barrel distortion and pin-cushion distortion. These types of distortions are often seen in zoom lenses at both ends of the zoom range.
About This Brand
One of the largest camera and lens manufacturers in the world, Canon currently sells scores of lenses in a wide variety of focal lengths. Canon splits its lenses into two main classes—its standard EF (electro focus) series, and its consumer-level EF-S lenses, which are only compatible with its smaller, APS-C sensor bodies. There are also two smaller classes of Tilt-Shift (TSE) lenses and Macro (MP-E) lenses. More generally speaking, Canon splits its lenses into nine main categories: ultra-wide zoom; standard zoom, telephoto zoom, wide angle, standard and medium telephoto, telephoto, super telephoto, macro, and tilt-shift.

Great lens to start out with, and recommended to me by many professional photographers for starting out. The 50mm f1.4 is the true 'expensive' and rugged version of this lens, however for the price, you can't complain. Worth picking up if you're looking for a good starter prime lens.

Does IS REALLY matter?

Strength
Well to sum it up quickly YES. The IS System is very helpful in low light situation. Helps provide a very sharp picture compare to the Non-IS version of this lens.
Weakness
No real noticeable weakness as of yet. Focuses fast (for the price) and no back or front focus problems. My lens was an import so only problem may be warranty.
I suggest this lens because it isn't too hard on the pocket. and combined with the 55-250 IS it would provide a easy to carry IS kit, and would not cost to much. It is a very nice lens for beginners. If i got to do it again i would.
easy handling, light weight, IS improves the quality of the shot
Weakness
no usm, not for long distance scene
I bought this lens for my Canon 400D body. It is a nice lens for outside portrait. Although the zoom distance is limited, the IS really a good feature for the investment. One time I tried for the long distance shot, not zoomed large enough but the picture was very clear without bluring. Its light weight is also a good fit for travel.By using this, I got fairy sharp pictures when I traveled.Overall, it is a good lens and I am satisfied with it so far.
Sharp and very effective range of zoom, best of the best that I have used !
Weakness
a little pricey but you get what you paid
Man, this is the best lense ever that I have had in hand, a Europe trip tells me what this lense can do, perfect pictures from any angle and distance, you will love it !
