Summary:This model has been tested by our experts.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS is part of the SLR lens
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, SLR lens
models like the EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
Image quality:
Image quality is based on tests of sharpness (modulation transfer function), geometric distortion, reflexes within the lens (flare), veiling glare index, vignetting, and macro performance.
Modulation transfer function:
This is a measure of lens performance and shows how well a lens reproduces object detail in the image it produces.
Geometric distortion:
All lenses have degrees of geometric distortion, which will depict straight lines as slightly curved. Two most common types are barrel distortion and pin-cushion distortion. These types of distortions are often seen in zoom lenses at both ends of the zoom range.
About This Brand
One of the largest camera and lens manufacturers in the world, Canon currently sells scores of lenses in a wide variety of focal lengths. Canon splits its lenses into two main classes—its standard EF (electro focus) series, and its consumer-level EF-S lenses, which are only compatible with its smaller, APS-C sensor bodies. There are also two smaller classes of Tilt-Shift (TSE) lenses and Macro (MP-E) lenses. More generally speaking, Canon splits its lenses into nine main categories: ultra-wide zoom; standard zoom, telephoto zoom, wide angle, standard and medium telephoto, telephoto, super telephoto, macro, and tilt-shift.

EFS lenses are not for use with full frame cameras, so any rebel, 50D, 7D, etc. Find another 55-250 zoom in this price range...can't do it. Fire away in auto and pics turn out great. Marching band at night under stadium lighting...no problem. Football at night under stadium lights, no problem-just play with settings to freeze action. The lense does have some low light level limitations but so do 2.8s that are heavy and cost thousands more. Daytime outdoor activities make great photos. Good pics, decent bokeh, happy parents.

Lens works great, I already had a 18 - 55 mm, this is a good companion. Because I have to change lens quite often, I considered other options that covered the 18 to 300 mm range, but they were to expensive.

I couldnt believe how fast I got my order in my mailbox! They called me to inform that they sent the product at first and then they updated me with an e-mail so I can track my package online. Perfect!
:Overall, I'm very satisfied with this lens considering of its price range. It is very useful on a 1.6x body and I'm using it even more often than my standard zoom lens now. Highly recommanded!
