Image quality:
Image quality is based on tests of sharpness (modulation transfer function), geometric distortion, reflexes within the lens (flare), veiling glare index, vignetting, and macro performance.
Modulation transfer function:
This is a measure of lens performance and shows how well a lens reproduces object detail in the image it produces.
Geometric distortion:
All lenses have degrees of geometric distortion, which will depict straight lines as slightly curved. Two most common types are barrel distortion and pin-cushion distortion. These types of distortions are often seen in zoom lenses at both ends of the zoom range.
About This Brand
Nikon is also a world leader in cameras and lenses. The company currently sells about dozens of auto-focus lenses and several manual focus lenses under the Nikkor brand. It splits its lenses between a standard F-Mount category and a smaller DX format class designed specifically for its small size sensor DX-format digital SLRs but can be used on full-size sensor bodies using the camera’s sensor crop settings. Nikkor auto-focus and manual-focus lenses cover a variety of focal lengths and price points and are divided into seven main categories: zoom, micro (aka macro), fisheye, wide angle, normal, telephoto, and PC, which is Nikon's tilt-shift category.

Zoom ratio The zoom ratio is expressed by a value such as 2x or 3x, and describes the relationship between the longest and shortest focal lengths. For example, a 3x optical zoom with a minimum focal length of 18mm would have a maximum focal length of 54mm.

This lens is one of the most versatile lens on the market. With a range of 18-200 it is an excellent lens for most situations - parties, reunions, weddings, scenery, etc. There is distortion at the widest angles, however, it is not out of the ordinary for 18-24mm lens. I highly recommend this lens for any level of photographer.

Comment:
I gave this lens as gifts to a 13 year old and my wife. They do not bother with the other lenses they have any more as it has become their lens of choice. It is fast to focus, and on macro my son uses the manual focus for super tight close ups. <br />Ok it is not a metal construct, take a look at the extra cost of the pro metal construct it is double, and I doubt many casual users need that kind of quality.<br /><br />It gathers light well and does dazzling night shots, and with 6X zoom you can get candid shots no matter what. Did I mention VR??? Vibration Reduction at this price is a real bonus. It lets you zoom with a fast enough shutter speed to get the shot. The only creeping I have seen is looking straight up or straight down when we were in the cold. Under normal shooting (over 40F) this never happens<br />Get this lens, snap it on to a D-60 or D-80, and see for yourself.

Comment:
I just cannot get used to plastic lenses. This one came as part of the D-90 kit. As an owner of many glass lenses (including a Canon 50mm 1.2 I am a bit spoiled. I like the 18-105 but it can't come close to the Canon or some of my better Nikkor lenses. However, it's not a bad lens at all. It takes fairly clear images as long as you keep it in the mid range of it's zoom abilities. Say around 70 mm or so it seems to clean up a bit. As for macro work it is a far cry from a good macro with a fairly long focusing distance to the subject. If you are doing any Macro work don't expect anything dazzling out of this lens. It will hold it's own but it's best used for landscapes and that type of photography.

Got it with a D90 kit. this is probably one of the most satisfying kit lens in the market. It produce picture quality that isn't visually worse than any other expensive lens. VR works great and saved many of my pics. however the swm is a bit slower than expected and the build is plastic and doesn't look too durable.. other than those, its a superb kit lens!
