About - Tamron AF 55-200mm f4-5.6 Di II LD Macro

The Tamron AF 55-200mm f4-5.6 Di II LD Macro is part of the SLR lens test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, SLR lens models like the AF 55-200mm f4-5.6 Di II LD Macro are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Image quality:
Image quality is based on tests of sharpness (modulation transfer function), geometric distortion, reflexes within the lens (flare), veiling glare index, vignetting, and macro performance.

Modulation transfer function:
This is a measure of lens performance and shows how well a lens reproduces object detail in the image it produces.

Geometric distortion:
All lenses have degrees of geometric distortion, which will depict straight lines as slightly curved. Two most common types are barrel distortion and pin-cushion distortion. These types of distortions are often seen in zoom lenses at both ends of the zoom range.

Best non-VR 55-200mm zoom out there
05/22/2007
Strength
Size and weight, good feel on the zoom ring, usually fast to focus, inexpensive, macro, and can focus closer than any other 55-200mm through the entire zoom range, hood is included.
Weakness
Loud autofocus. Autofocus is through screw drive, so its a manual focus if you have the D40. Rotating focus ring with a cheap feel on the manual focus is annoying with circular polarizer.
This is a great daytime lens for action and macro work. The minimum aperature of F4-5.6 is standard for all 55-200 lenses and these are not great in low light where fast shutter speeds are necessary. If you're at the kid's baseball or football game and it is sunny out, your pictures will be beautiful with great colors. I have taken this lens to a MN Twins game indoors and I need to crank the ISO setting way up on my D50 to get shutter speeds quick enough to eliminate blur from moving subjects or my hands moving. The lens also works well on my sister in law's D200 and she has borrowed it from me to shoot kids sporting events with great results. The autofocus is usually very fast, but if it does not lock on, it will hunt around in a noisy fashon and it will seem like an eternity. I tried the Sigma, Quantaray, and Nikon's non-vibration reduction model and liked this one the best. It also happens to be one of the cheapest. Don't be thrown off by the plastic connection or lack of vibration reduction if most of you pictures with this lens will be outdoors, becuase at 1/320s, VR means nothing. If you are shooting in lower light, have a D40, or just like to say you have the newest stuff, get the new $249 Nikon VR model. Otherwise, get this Tamron.
