Modulation transfer function:
This is a measure of lens performance and shows how well a lens reproduces object detail in the image it produces.

I've happily owned this lens for about 3 years. I bought it because it seemed like it would fit all of my needs going from wide angle 18mm to telephoto at 200mm. It's done a pretty good job of living up to all-in-one.<br />I would process and view my photos in Photoshop Elements.<br />The learning came when I bought an HD laptop and started viewing the photos on an HD TV. What looked very good on a lower resolution monitor consistently looked out-of-focus on HD. I've compared this lens to my prime 50mm and found the culprit. The prime lens was crystal clear sharp. The 18-200, slightly out-of-focus. Therein lies the compromise, super convenience for a mediocre photo.<br />Pay close attention to the Modulation Transfer Function column in the Consumer Report review. This measures the contrast & resolution a lens can deliver.<br />I'd suggest having separate telephoto and wide-angle lenses. Prime lenses are known for their clarity.

Comment:
I use this with a Minolta Maxxum 5D [Sony mount]. I got it for trips to Yosemite and Nova Scotia, so it got quite a workout. It never failed me. The Sigma would have been the other choice. Extensive testing reported on the web showed the main limitation of both to be a bit of distortion due to the wide range of focal length. Actually, the results split about 50-50 between the brands, with the most noticeable flaws occurring at different places. It has seldom bothered me.<br /><br />For closeups, this lens will fill the picture with a well-focused copy of the lens cap, my favorite test. That suits me!<br /><br />I don't even remember where my other lenses are now.

Comment:
Used primarily for railroad photography, both narrow gauge prototype and model railroads. The only exceptions are those that require extreme close-ups. For this I use a Sony 50mm macro to go with my Sony A350 DSLR.

Nice Lens...too bad about the lockups (Error 99)

Strength
Nice Zoom Range / Good Speed / Compact
Weakness
May cause Error 99 and cause camera to lock up, requiring you to send lens in for Recalibration
Bought this lens with my Digital Rebel XT (EOS 350D). Kept getting intermittent Error 99 messages, although most were when I shot in bright light. Purchased a Canon brand 50mm prime and no lockups, no errors. Sending lens to Tamron for repair tomorrow. Support tech said it will have to be recalibrated & will probably take 6-8 weeks before I get it back.
This is the lens for me. It covers almost all your normal shooting needs.Although I only recently got this lens for my 350D, I have two other Tamron 28-300 lenses for my 35MM film camers. When I saw this lens was available in digital format (18-200)I went on PriceGrabber and ordered it that day.The lens is comfortable to use,has a FAST AF, lens hood included and a Macro to boot. What more could you want?
