Summary:An all-in-one inkjet printer from HP with scan and copy functions, an automatic document feeder, built-in faxing, and Wi-Fi networking. Works with both Windows and Mac OS.
The HP Officejet 4500 Wireless is an all-in-one inkjet printer with scan and copy functions, an automatic document feeder, built-in faxing, and Wi-Fi networking. It works with both Windows and Mac OS. There's an automatic document feeder to let you copy or scan a stack of pages in one operation. The printer has no photo preview display. Unlike most color printers, the HP Officejet 4500 Wireless lacks a memory-card reader. You can connect directly to a PC with a USB cable, or to your network router wirelessly with Wi-Fi. This model has built-in faxing, can store incoming faxes if the paper runs out, and can send faxes from an attached PC.
About This Brand
Its Photosmart printers are ink-jets for those whose emphasis is on printing photos. The Officejet line, also an ink-jet brand, is geared more toward home offices and small businesses. Laserjets are laser printers available as black-and-white and color models in standard and all-in-one configurations. The Deskjet line is for simpler tasks, while the Business Inkjet is a higher-priced professional model. The Designjet series is for high-end graphics printing. For the widest selection of HP printers at the best prices, try Newegg.com. PCConnection, PCMall, and HP’s own Web site also have a broad selection, while Amazon, Costco, and Tiger Direct have better-than-average prices.

Networking The ability to connect to a home network for printing from a computer either via an Ethernet or a WiFi connection. Ethernet is the common wired network and WiFi is the wireless format commonly found in laptop computers.
This printer has been giving me problem after problem from the moment I plugged it in.
First, the wireless element clogs up bandwith even when it's not in use and only on.
Second, the driver has to be re-installed constantly on any computer that isn't running one specific verion of a OS.
Third, it has a jam rate of about 1 of every 10 pages fed.
Fourth, it often has to be fed by hand as the feeder will either fail to grab the paper in the tray and think it's out, or it will try to grab more than one sheet, often the whole stack. This happens for 1 of every 2 pages fed.
Fifth, the scanning feature fails to work, spitting out a variety of error messages. Trying to scan more than 7 pages into a document is unrealistic with this printer,
and last, it is ink hungry, with about 30-50 pages per cartridge.

Energy Save Mode goes permanent once it enters, unless printer is wakened every day, requiring unplugging-waiting 30 secs-replugging-restart. Supposed fix in the works for over 2 years every time tech support is emailed. Occurred right after purchase and with replacement printer shipped by tech support. Experts are working on a fix and we will email you with an update Numerous similar problems on HP's own blog.

Comment:
The problems started soon after I got it. It just never worked well. Jams constantly. Reports its out of paper when it isn't. I keep getting this mechanical error. No idea what it means. I'm in IT so I certainly have experience with configuring printers/wireless printing. This printer didn't do that well either. Definite misstep for hp.
