I have had two of these Hitachi drills. The first broke drilling into a stud. The second, replacement drill, broke halfway through building a 10x10 foot deck. In both instances, I'd only used them for small to medium weekend products up to that point. Both times they broke after drilling a pilot hole and installing a screw. The item definitely should not have broken. Go with a different brand.

I OWN THIS MODEL AND THE PREVIOUS MODEL WHICH IS THE SAME THING, SAME BATTERIES JUST SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT COSMETICS. I BOUGHT THE PREVIOUS MODEL ALMOST TEN YEARS AGO AND STILL USE THE ORIGINAL TWO BATTERIES AND THEY STILL HOLD A GOOD CHARGE AND LAST JUST AS LONG AS THEY DID WHEN THEY WERE NEW. THIS ISN'T AN 18 VOLT DRILL AND I DON'T EXPECT IT TO PERFORM LIKE AN 18 VOLT DRILL. I USE THIS ONE 9 TIMES OUT OF TEN AND USE MY 18 VOLT FOR HEAVY DUTY JOBS (HAMMMER DRILLING, 1 WOOD BITS, 1/2 METAL DRILLING, HEAVY TORQUING JOBS, ETC.). I BOUGHT THE NEW MODEL Hitachi DS12DVF3 FOR ONE REASON ONLY, I'M THINKING MY ORIGINAL BATTERIES THAT ARE GOING ON 10 YEARS OLD ARE SURELY GONNA GO BAD SOON, THOUGH THEY HAVEN'T YET, I FOUND THIS NEW MODEL IN A KIT WITH, THE SAME KIT MY ORIGINAL ONE CAME IN, IT INCLUDED THE DRILL, 2 BATTERIES, CHARGER, FLASHLIGHT & CASE FOR [$]. ONE BATTERY FOR THIS DRILL AT MY LOCAL HARDWARE STORE IS $36, SO I FIGURE THE KIT WAS A GREAT INVESTMENT. I NOW KEEP THE NEW ONE AT HOME AND STILL USE THE OLD ONE ON JOB SITES. IT'S YET TO LET ME DOWN. BEST DRILL, CORDLESS OR OTHERWISE, I'VE EVER OWNED.

Comment:
This is a really nice light duty drill. It will drive 3 screws in pine or fur, but not hard wood. I have a big heavy 24v drill for heavy duty projects. I use the Hitachi about 80% of the time, because is so well balanced and light. The price is great for the quality. Go to [...] and see the ratings there for a truer picture of how great this little drill is!
