Summary:This 22-inch, variable-speed John Deere mower has a premium engine and an electric start can mulch, bag, or side-discharge. It is backed by a 2-year warranty.
This 22-inch self-propelled gas mower operates in rear-wheel drive at variable speeds. It features a premium 190cc displacement engine by Briggs & Stratton that has overhead valves (OHV). Engines with OHV tend to run cleaner and start more easily as they get older. This model can re-cut clippings until they're small enough to settle back into the lawn as mulch, bag them into a removable catcher, or discharge them through a side chute. It also has electric start, eliminating the need to pull-start the engine. To change the grass-cutting height, a single lever can be used to quickly adjust all wheels at once. This John Deere includes a 2-year warranty for any defects.
About This Brand
John Deere makes and markets one of the best-selling lines of lawn tractors at retail. John Deere lawn tractors are fully featured and have deck widths from 42 to 54 inches. Most models have hydrostatic drive and Briggs & Stratton engines. John Deere lawn tractors are sold at dealers, Home Depot, and Lowe's. The company markets a small line of three very similar lawn mowers through dealers and at Lowe's. Those mowers are also available in a California-emissions version. All models feature rear-wheel drive, a 21-inch, and a Briggs & Stratton engine and are priced from $400. John Deere also markets a line of garden tractors and zero-turn riders.
Forward speeds Some self-propelled mowers have one speed, usually about 2 1/2 mph; others have several; still others have a continuous range, typically from 1 to 3 mph. Two or more speeds let you adjust to the terrain and grass.

Drive wheels Front-wheel drive allows you to make U-turns by pushing down on the handlebar and swinging the mower around without disengaging the drive. The penalty is less traction than rear-wheel drive mowers.

Deck size (in.) Most models have a deck size, or cutting swath, of 20 to 22 inches. There is no significant advantage from one size to another. A larger deck can cut more grass in a single pass, but in this size range the difference is negligible.

Electric start Starts a gasoline-powered engine with the turn of a key by the operator. An electric start is powered by an on-board battery that requires periodic charging.
Electric start
Yes
Blade brake clutch Allows the gasoline engine to continue to run when the operator leaves the area behind the handlebar to empty the grass-clipping collection bag or to move an object in the path of the mower. It saves wear on the engine by reducing stopping/ restarting cycles.
Blade brake clutch
No
Engine size For gas-powered mowers, engine size in cubic centimeters (cc) provides a rough indication of the engine's power; electric models are rated in volts (for cordless) or amperes (corded). A larger number for either a gas or electric model, however, does not necessarily result in better cutting performance.
Engine size
190 cc
Engine manufacturer Stated manufacturer of a gasoline engine. For some mowers the engine manufacturer is not documented and is listed as "unknown.".
This mower has been to the shop three times in less then one year. Self propel not working/motor knocking/self propel again. This has been the worse mower I have ever owned and I have owned many, very dissatisfied!

Cons
Cuts Unevenly
Propel Mechanism Awkward
Terrible Mulching

Comment:
Returned this after 30 days and about 7 times mowing my lawn. Cut is extremely uneven, scalping some areas, leaving others several inches high, all within a 10 foot long area. I even checked my blades, wheel height, etc. and all seemed fine. My wife even noticed it! Does not mulch at all, just piles and piles of grass everywhere. Nowhere near as good as my Honda or Toro did. Self propel handle/activating mechanism can be awkward, but speed is good, faster than my old Toro. Salesman at store said that of 20 sold, 5 have been returned for similar reasons.

Comment:
This cuts well, bags well, mulches well, better than most. On the higher settings it leaves some cut grass behind. The engine is powerful, the electric start is great, the pull start is effortless, the rear drive is superb. It's quiet and restarts are great. The automatic choke is great. The features are there, but the build quality is just not what one would expect from John Deere, especially for [$]. I'm satisfied, yet somewhat disappointed, there's a lot of plastic and there's sure not [$] worth of quality built into this machine. I have no doubt that the Briggs engine will last for years while I think that the rest of the mower will fall apart well before the engine dies. In comparison to my retired and recycled 14 y/o Craftsman, lawnmowing is uneventful now. Regular issues with the Craftsman: Clogging, bag falling off, front drive wheels slipping, esp as bag got full, bag difficult to empty.I'm easy on equipment and willing to use a bit of careful finesse and maintenance to make it last, but people that are hard on things will probably break wheels and the drive handle or drive mechanism.I could not bring myself to buy a Honda so I went with Green and Yellow.
