This is a follow up post. I called B&D and they told me that they will not sell me the plastic gear. They admit that it and the belt wear quickly but they will not sell the plastic gear with out the $60 motor. Since the whole thing was only [$], its not worth it. They will sell the metal drive gear for $1 but that is not the part that wears out. In my opinion, B&D designed this part to fail after the warranty period with the expectation that you would buy a second trimmer from them. lol.

Worked well. It was nice to not have gas that kids could get in to. As with all reviews I have seen, the belt broke after about a year. The belt can be replaced if you are up for a disassemble and reassemble. The replacement belt is [$]. The problem is that the plastic gear that is driven by the belt is not on the part list. It is part of the [$] Motor assembly. Strange that it is not available by its self but the metal drive gear is for only [$]. Of course the metal gear is not warn at all and does not need replacement. After the first year of use and the loss of the belt, I am hesitant to get another belt because the plastic gear appears to be more than half way through its teeth. The belt showed no sign of wear other than the fact it was broken so excessive wear of the belt did not cause the damage to the gear. I plan to contact a B&D service center to see if they will sell me just the gear from the drive assembly. It can't be worth more than the $1.39 drive gear. If they will, I will stock up on 5 or so gears and belts. If the drive assembly plastic gear is designed to wear out after a year, I suspect that the rest of this design is not tested beyond a year of use. The fact that I have to hunt down the weakest part that is obviously designed to fail makes me wish I went for the more expensive product on the Consumer Reports recommended list.
