Our most recent tests of navigation devices show that new GPS models from Magellan and Motorola are improved over those they replace. But they still trail top-rated units from Garmin and TomTom.
Prices continue to drop, with recommended models starting at about $120. Full-featured models begin at less than $200, and some of those include free lifetime traffic information.
1 Garmin is a premium navigator with connected services that include a Google-based search, traffic and weather reports, and local information. 2 TomTom is also a connected, upscale device. Connective services require subscription fees.
3 Garmin is a CR Best Buy, offering fully capable navigation for much less money, and minus the connectivity.
Smart phones with GPS navigation offer many of the advantages of navigators for cars, but dedicated devices still have some advantages. Their screens are generally larger and easier to read, audio quality is better, and they're not dependent on a data signal in order to operate.
