Car crash

Last reviewed: September 2010
  • Move the car out of the traffic lane if possible.
  • Turn on the hazard flashers.
  • If it's not safe to leave the car, keep your safety belt buckled until help arrives.
  • Do not move people who are badly injured unless it's absolutely necessary.
  • Call 911.
  • Document the scene: Write down names and numbers, and exchange insurance information. Record license plate numbers, take photos, and make a sketch of the cars' positions relative to the road, along with their direction of travel.
  • Call your insurance company as soon as possible.
